Scrappy Dough in Sungai Besi, KL
The Pocket is a new hangout spot that has quietly emerged in KL, born out of a refurbished, abandoned building. Among the first shops to move in is Scrappy Dough, a cafe that’s all about sourdough bagels, focaccia, and bread, with playful Asian-inspired twists like kam heong and tom yam.
We dropped by this retro cafe to try their sourdough bakes.
Freshly baked sourdough bagels and focaccia
If we had to sum up the cafe’s vibe as a person, it’d be that friend who thrifts their entire wardrobe – old-school with a bit of edge. It still wears the building’s old walls and peeling paint like a badge of character.
The shop itself is tiny, so all the seating is outdoors – but don’t worry, it’s sheltered. Orders are placed at the counter, and when your order tag starts beeping red, you’ll pick up your food from the side window.
While sourdough bagels aren’t new, Scrappy Dough surely puts their own spin on them. There are Kam Heong and Sambal Chicken bagel sandwiches (from RM16), Curry Potato focaccia (RM16), and Kombu Truffle Butter with sourdough bread (RM18).
You can pair the standalone sourdough bagels (from RM6) – Plain, Earl Grey, Coco Cranberry – with cream cheese spreads (from RM7) such as Syrup Bandung Cranberry and Lemon.
Kam Heong Chicken Bagel Sandwich
The Kam Heong Chicken Bagel Sandwich (RM17) may look simple – just chicken and lettuce – but the flavour runs deep.
The chicken is generously coated in a thick, almost paste-like kam heong dressing that clings to every piece. It carries a satay-like taste layered with aromatic curry notes, the kind that got us immediately saying, “Okay, I need another bite.”
Texture-wise, the bagel leans on the fluffier side, giving a softer bite than the typical toasted bagel.
Earl Grey Bagel + Syrup Bandung Cream Cheese
As daringly pink as the Syrup Bandung Cream Cheese (RM8) appeared, the flavour turned out low-key. The rose lingered gently at the back of the tongue rather than taking over the Earl Grey Bagel (RM7).
Still, we did wish the sourdough tang came through more strongly – it veered a little too close to a regular bagel in taste.
Tomyam Mushroom Foccacia
Tomyam Mushroom Focaccia (RM17) feels like a focaccia-pizza hybrid, with a rich, almost “wet” mouthful, loaded with cheese, mushrooms, and roasted cherry tomatoes. We actually really enjoyed it.
Cheese pulls aside, what really won us over was the robust tomyam flavour, with just the right amount of heat. Every so often, a cherry tomato would burst, releasing a pocket of zesty juice that cut through the richness, keeping each bite bright and fresh.

At Scrappy Dough, the aesthetic lured us in, but the sourdough baked goods made us stay. Light bite or full meal, the menu’s got you covered – and no, this isn’t “just another Instagrammable cafe in town”.
