This Sober Listening Bar In PJ Has Vinyl Nights With A Live DJ Spinning R&B Hits Past Midnight

Stereo-Type in Petaling Jaya

If you’re looking to de-stress and unwind during the weekends, Stereo-Type should be on your list of places to visit. This sober bar in Petaling Jaya blends a cosy bar atmosphere with a vinyl listening room, serving laidback beats alongside zero-proof cocktails that are crafted to mirror the real thing. You get all the fun after-hours vibes of a bar, but without the liquor.

What is Stereo-Type?

The centrepiece of StereoType is the shelves of vinyl records, which sit behind a DJ set. Flanking these are two high-quality surround-sound speakers that entertain patrons with a steady stream of beats through the night.

The cosy space is bathed in warm, moody light that sets the after-hours bar atmosphere. With seating for around 50 people and a mix of low and high tables, the space strikes a balance between intimate and social, making it a great spot for a casual night out or even a first date.

If you want some peace from the crowd and music, they have an outdoor seating area equipped with tables and high chairs that also doubles as a smoking area.

Vinyl nights twice a week

If you’re looking to up the ante, head down to Stereo-Type on a Thursday or Sunday, when Stereo-Type transforms into a full-on R&B listening experience where a resident DJ takes over the deck from 10pm. Expect to hear R&B tracks from way back, with the music alive right up until closing time.

What to order at Stereo-Type?

Food-wise, the menu at Stereo-Type leans towards snacks to enjoy with drinks, such as nachos, fries, chicken wings, and burgers.

But the real talking point is the Mug Pasta (RM29.90). Available in three varieties – garlic butter sambal, spicy aglio olio, and spicy carbonara – the pasta comes served in a charming oversized cappuccino mug that makes it easy to slurp up the pasta.

Don’t let the size fool you, though; the mug holds a surprisingly hearty portion that’ll fill up your tummy. And there’s actually a fun reason behind the quirky presentation: it’s designed to encourage guests to get up, walk around, and mingle with fellow patrons.

On the drinks side of the menu, there’s a sober spin on cocktail classics, with options like a Piña Colada (RM19.90) and Long Island Teh Ais (RM19.90) sans any alcohol.

We went with their Butterbeer (RM21.90), which was a delightful combo of rich, buttery foam layered over a fizzy butter-laced cream soda that’s as fun to look at as it is to drink.
