First Look At Tim Hortons – Must-Try Coffee & Doughnuts At Two New Outlets In Malaysia

Tim Hortons in Malaysia

There’s never too many spots to get our daily cup of joe. A new one that we can visit for the unbeatable coffee-and-doughnut duo is Tim Hortons. The Canadian coffeehouse is now in Malaysia, with their first outpost in the country welcoming patrons at IOI City Mall on 15th August 2024.

We visited their Sunway Velocity outlet ahead of opening day to share everything you need to know about it – must-try menu items, prices for the iconic Timbits, as well as their two new stores’ opening dates and deals, included.

Food at Tim Hortons in Malaysia

Tim Hortons is a Canadian household name that’s best known for their morning brews and saccharine doughnuts. These are now available in Malaysia, along with a collection of Malaysia-only doughnuts and drinks that incorporate local flavours.

To make sure every Malaysian can get a taste of their offerings, Tim Hortons doesn’t serve any pork, lard, or alcohol at their Malaysia outlets and strictly sources their ingredients from halal-certified suppliers.

Doughnuts and Timbits

The true hallmark of Timmies is, no doubt, their doughnuts.

In Malaysia, they are available individually from RM3.50. The old-school Classic Glaze Donut is the cheapest item behind the glass case display of doughnuts, while the Maple Biscoff Donut is the priciest one.

If you’re tapau-ing a bunch of them, you can opt for a 6-pack box of classic (RM21) glazed or assorted (RM28) glazed and cream-filled flavours.

Popular picks are Maple Biscoff (RM6.50/each) with Biscoff cookie sprinkled over maple-glazed doughnut, and Boston Cream (RM6/each) – a chocolate-glazed doughnut stuffed with sweet venetian cream.

Other options include Strawberry Dazzle Dream and Matcha Crumble, as well as Timmies’ Malaysian specials, the Pineapple and the Kaya (RM5/each), that take on flavours beloved by locals in a sweet cream filling form.

The flavours are all too tooth-achingly sweet for our liking, but the Maple Biscoff in particular was worth the calories. The crunch of the cookie crumble complemented the fluffy doughnut, while the Biscoff and maple glaze blended nicely with their similar taste profiles.

There’s also the coffeehouse’s trademark Timbits, or bite-sized doughnut holes. Malaysia’s menu features three flavours: Classic Glaze (RM1.50/each), Cinnamon Sugar (RM2/each), or Birthday Cake (RM2/each).

Those with a craving for these can go for a 10-Pack (RM15) box with an assortment of the available flavours.

Signature coffee brews and Iced Capp

A run to Tim Hortons is incomplete without a beverage in hand when you leave – a brewed coffee, to be precise.

A must-try is the Double Double (RM13/small), with double portions of cream and sugar added to a dark roast blend to form a wholly American drink. We enjoyed the Daily Brew (RM10/small) most – it’s a simple yet well done roasted coffee with the perfect balance of acid and body that’ll be sure to perk you up for your 9-5.

These are freshly brewed using an original blend of 100% Arabica beans and fresh milk. The latter can be swopped out for soy, almond, or coconut milk for RM2.50, or oat for RM3.50.

On those especially hot days, opt for a Iced Capp that pours blended coffee and non-coffee drinks over ice. Go-to orders among loyal patrons are the flavoured French Vanilla (RM14) and Maple French Vanilla (RM15).

For something truly Malaysian, opt for the Butterscotch Ondeh-Ondeh (RM15) – a mild pandan-flavoured base is topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of butterscotch syrup. The Teh Tarik Tribute (RM15) is another Malaysian-inspired drink – it tastes similar to teh ais, but frozen to achieve a slushie consistency.

Pasta bakes and melts

All of the above aside, it’s not just sweet treats and coffee drinks at Timmies.

Tim Hortons in Malaysia - melts

At the new Tim Hortons, you can also enjoy sourdough melts (from RM16) such as Sambal Grilled Cheese and Maple Chicken Deli & Cheese. The latter is a classic sandwich with impressive cheese pulls and layers of chicken ham, while the Malaysian-special Sambal Grilled Cheese had just a kick of spice that will be tolerable even for your spice-intolerant friend.

Meatless options are also available – the Grilled Cheese & Caramelised Onion, for starters, is a classic grilled cheese sandwich made up of three kinds of cheese.

Tim Hortons in malaysia - pasta bakes

As for the pasta bakes, they have reasonable portions for their higher RM19 price tag.

The Pesto Cream Chicken & Mozzarella is perfect for those who aren’t fond of overly herbaceous pesto – we found it rich but not overpowering, and it won’t make you feel jelak if you’re wolfing it down by yourself. The Beef Ragu Bolognese is a classic that’s hard to go wrong with, but we recommend sharing it with a friend, as the rich tomato-based sauce and generous amount of cheese can feel a bit heavy after multiple bites.

Two coffee shops to open in August
