9 Best Tiramisu In Penang With All The Layers & Liqueur To Fall Spoon-First In Love

Best tiramisu in Penang

You may have said no to an after-meal sweet treat, but when the dessert’s tiramisu, you’ll inevitably be reaching for a couple of spoonfuls. Tiramisu is just that girl.

And while we can pinpoint all the reasons that make tiramisu the blueprint of all desserts, we would rather just stuff our faces in them instead. Tiramisu perfection can be found all around the Klang Valley, but Penang is not falling behind when it comes to serving the classic Italian dessert with the most luxurious layers and buzz of booze.

So, here are 9 tiramisu spots in Penang that’ll sweep you off your feet with their rendition of the silky delicacy, whether you’re a fan or not.

1. Narrow Marrow

Relishing plates of boozy tiramisu in an artsy cafe that looks like a place you happen to just stumble upon is, of course, social media’s new favourite thing. But we promise that Narrow Marrow’s slabs of tiramisu live up to their hype.

Like how the cafe oozes a sort of mismatched charm, their tiramisu is rough around the edges, and the locals love it for that. The options here are alluring, all priced at RM24 per slice – there’s the Espresso Kahlua that’s pleasingly boozy and the Espresso Baileys for something lusher, the Dirty Bourbon is a complex yet harmonious amalgam of flavours, while the Blueberry Matcha Rum makes for a fine midday treat. Non-alcoholic flavours include the Strawberry Hojicha and Dirty Chai, a little austere but still irresistible.

Address: 312, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Penang
Opening hours: Thu–Mon 3pm-11pm (Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays)

2. ChinaHouse

For the longest time, ChinaHouse has been most of the locals’ go-to whenever the tiramisu craving hits. It wouldn’t be all that far-fetched to say that the cafe pioneered the tiramisu craze in the state, and is especially known for their very distinct execution of the dessert – it is more akin to a cake than the traditional lasagne-esque form.

In place of the ladyfingers are ultra-soft layers of chocolate sponge cakes infused with strong coffee and rum, sandwiching a decent layer of chocolate cream studded with dark chocolate shards, which adds to its decadence. The behemoth slice is frosted in rich mascarpone cream and fully encrusted with crystallised roasted almonds, offering an oddly gratifying texture. Patrons can choose to enjoy either an alcoholic or a non-alcoholic slice, each priced at RM23.

Address: 153 & 155, Lebuh Pantai and 183B, Lebuh Victoria, George Town, Penang
Opening hours: 9.30am-1am, Daily (Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays)

3. 1.618 Roastery

The tiramisu (RM19) at 1.618 Roastery is as simple as a classic tiramisu can be in the aesthetics department, but you’re in for pleasant jolts of surprises. Layers of rich mascarpone, soft cream, and bitter ladyfingers sit atop a crispy stage of chocolate crunch, and the finished product is one of minimalistic beauty that’s simply adorned with cocoa powder. Straightforward, no-frills, and most importantly, delicious.

Address: 61, Beach St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang

4. Jo Gourmand Cafe

Parisian-inspired cafe Jo Gourmand is known for their dainty cakes that match the whimsy ambience of the cafe, and their VSOP Tiramisu (RM16) is no different.

One bite in and you can just tell that the tiramisu is layered with love and alcohol – the Very Superior Old Pale brandy, to be precise. The ladyfingers are dipped in coffee and brandy just enough to flirt with decadence, and the cloud of mascarpone cheese melts away the slight heat from the bold and lush flavours of the other layers. It’s rich, but not heavy.

Address: 203, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Penang
Opening hours: Wed–Mon 9am-6pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

5. Halzan Restaurant

Now this is one for the adults. The Drunken Tiramisu (RM22) at Halzan Restaurant in Gurney Plaza mall lives up to its name for sure. The ladyfingers are properly drenched with espresso and liquor – it almost slaps you into ecstasy. Coupled with the impossibly smooth cream and the boldness of the cocoa powder, the tiramisu here is no shy dessert.

If you prefer something a little less wild, their non-alcoholic rendition of the Chocolate Espresso Tiramisu (RM20) is just as good.

Address: No 168A, Central@Gurney Unit G08, Halzan Penang, Persiaran Gurney, 10250 George Town, Penang
Opening hours: 10am-12am, Daily

It has become something of a requirement to drop by Norm Micro Roastery whenever one is visiting Penang, just to have a taste of the cafe’s Signature Tiramisu (RM23.90), and that’s saying a lot.

The jagged squares stay true to the traditional flavours in every sense – the coffee flavour is prominent, the alcohol liberal, and the mascarpone cream is not overly sweet. You’ll be glad you listened.

Address: 13, Gat Lebuh Gereja, George Town, 10300 George Town, Penang

If all else fails you, you can trust Nero Nero Penang – a restaurant housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century shophouse that’s dedicated to showcasing the finest flavours of Southern Italy – to serve up a proper tiramisu (RM45) at the end of your meal, so make sure you leave some space.

The dessert here is a balanced act of alcohol from the coffee liqueur, sweet creaminess from the mascarpone, and robustness from the heady coffee – a perfect end to your meal, or as an accompaniment to your second glass of wine.

Roots Dessert Cafe’s tiramisu (RM29) is all dressed up for social media, and its flavours are easy crowd-pleasers as well.

Rather than the traditional slab, espresso-soaked ladyfingers are stacked upon one another with neat pipings of mascarpone cream in between and atop, and finished with the essential shower of cocoa powder. Pour-shots are inevitable for any viral TikTok videos, and so there’s one for the tiramisu here too – a tiny jug of chocolate cream to swamp your dessert in.

When we enter the tropical forests of Penang, we usually expect to find families of cheeky monkeys, not the dreamiest dessert ever, a.k.a tiramisu. Perched above the sea-swept city of Penang and within the verdant hills, the treetop cafe of Kopi Hutan offers an assortment of sweet treats, and amongst them, a towering stack of tiramisu (RM15).

This one skips the theatrics and the heavy-headed booze. It’s a delicate affair with mascarpone layers whipped into clouds and thick ladyfingers kissed by robust coffee. You’re in nature after all.
