Tofu G in KL
Malaysians already enjoy tofu in both sweet and savoury dishes. So while the concept of tofu-based desserts isn’t alien to us, turning the unassuming white block of bean curd into a silky, sweet scoop of gelato comes as something pretty new to most of us.
Cue Tofu G, the latest gelato shop in KL that serves just that: tofu-based gelato that is dairy-free, vegan-friendly, and more importantly, just as creamy and decadent as regular gelato scoops.

The gelato served at Tofu G is entirely plant-based, as they use tofu as the main ingredient in their sole offering. These are freshly churned in transparent see-through churning vats at their wood-decked stall just outside of KL’s hyped MODU.
Originally from Singapore, the gelato shop has set up their first outpost in Malaysia, inside The Exchange TRX.

There are eight flavours to order here, including the must-tries: the pomegranate, high-protein tofu, pistachio, and sweet corn. If you’re having trouble deciding what flavours you want, you can ask the staff for a tester.

When the term high-protein is labelled next to anything, one would usually expect it to taste like a questionable concoction made by a gym bro. However, Tofu G’s high-protein tofu gelato had none of it. The gelato’s texture was silky smooth, and the flavour profile was distinctively tofu but emboldened by toasted soyabean powder. It was reminiscent of the locally-loved tau fu fah, but in cold form.

Meanwhile, the pomegranate gelato boasted a tart, fruity taste and had crunchy nuts sprinkled on top. As for the pistachio gelato, it had pistachio notes through and through.
Finally, the sweet corn gelato imparted a distinct corn flavour that had the nostalgic taste of ais krim potong jagung, albeit the one from Tofu G had a creamier and more indulgent mouthfeel.

Except for the high-protein tofu gelato, the rest of the gelatos bore little to no tofu taste, and their individual flavours really stood out. We confidently agreed that if you gave someone gelato from Tofu G, they would not be able to tell that it was vegan and made from tofu.
