UFOREA indoor playground in Penang
The next term holidays are not till September. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a headstart on making plans for the whole fam, especially if you feel like you’ve already checked off all the kid-friendly spots to visit near you.
Over in Penang, there’s a new futuristic indoor playground set to open in September 2024 just in time for the school holidays – UFOREA. The indoor playground will have nine zones with themed play structures like a pastel-coloured climbing wall and a futuristic space-inspired playground set.
Here’s everything we know about it:
A new indoor playground in Tanjung Tokong

Set to open sometime in September, UFOREA can be found at Island 88, a shopping centre in Tanjung Tokong that’s just a 4-minute drive from George Town’s iconic Straits Quay.
It’ll span a whopping 20,000sqft of space on the 3rd floor of the mall – to help you put this into perspective, that’s about 22 badminton courts combined.
For the uninitiated, Island 88 – formerly known as Island Plaza – is one of the oldest malls in Penang that was reportedly acquired by a Hong Kong tycoon in 2022. A whole new set of tenants are expected to open in the neighbourhood mall. That includes UFOREA.

Based on artistic impression photos shared by UFOREA to its official Facebook page, the indoor playground takes play zone themes to the next level. Space, fantasy, and disco are just some of the themes for its nine zones.

You might just think that UFOREA is an attraction just for photo ops with how unique the themes for its play zones are. Take for instance, the futuristic space-themed playground set with slides emerging from “planets” and “orbits” hovering overhead at the Cosmic Exploration zone.

At the Brave Adventure Challenge zone, the kiddos can crawl and bounce on nets stretched from structures of massive, orange-tinged mushrooms – they’ll feel like they’ve stepped onto the pages of a fairy tale. Right after, step back into the future with a visit to the Dazzling Light Fantasy zone, where a light game and a feast of light and shadow awaits.

Beyond play zones, there are also more experiential zones that’ll be sure to further entertain the young’uns once they’re done exploring the slides and climbing walls.

The Fairytale Dress-Up Experience lets aspiring princes and princesses dress to the nines in costumes, while the Interactive Educational Supermarket is a realistic grocery store set-up for role-playing activities.

As for chill zones, the Joyful Reading & Play Area is a cosy library that’s set to have reading materials on shelves and a step seating area with comfy cushions. The indoor playground will also have an in-house cafe – the Mini Cafe – which will have flowers adorning the ceiling of the all-pink space.
