Tang Jie-Ee Wei & Pearly-Thinaah make history
Badminton is a sport that we Malaysians will always rally behind. And the celebrations for our athletes were made even more special on Malaysia’s National Day.
Mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, deftly secured the coveted world championship title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in Paris on 31st August 2025.
In another momentous feat, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah Muralitharan etched their names into history as the first Malaysian women’s doubles team to reach the final of the World Championships, though narrowly defeated in a three-game thriller by the reigning world No. 1, China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning.
A Merdeka gift from Tang Jie-Ee Wei’s triumph
On 31st August, badminton mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei took to the court. And they didn’t disappoint. They delivered a blistering 21-15, 21-14 victory at Adidas Arena, over China’s top duo, Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin, wrapping up the match in just 40 minutes. This triumph was their first championship of the year, and their fourth since 2022. This historic win propelled them to No. 3 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings, thanks to the 14,500 points awarded.

Their moment of victory spilled over into Malaysia’s Merdeka Day festivities, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulating the pair on X, hailing it a “National Day gift”.

Pearly-Thinaah duo makes history for Malaysia
The same evening, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah Muralitharan took centre stage against China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning in a breathtaking 83-minute showdown. Despite dropping the first game, Pearly-Thinaah fought back to take the second, showcasing resilience by holding three-game points before the Chinese pair clawed back. The final game was a tight contest, ending in a 14-21, 22-20, 17-21 loss for the Malaysians.

Though victory eluded them, their silver medal represents a record achievement for Malaysian women’s doubles, surpassing their previous best quarter-final finish in 2023. The pair also made history on 30th August, when they advanced to the final of the BWF World Championships, and became the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to do so.

The achievements of the Malaysian duos in the mixed doubles and women’s doubles have reinforced the nation’s dominance in doubles badminton. It was truly a Merdeka gift for us Malaysians, and we look forward to cheering on all our badminton athletes in their future matches.
