Museum Of The Moon in Sarawak

Stargazers and dreamers in Malaysia – this might just be the only chance you’ll get to be starstruck by the mystical moon up close. Hosted in Sarawak is the Museum Of The Moon, an artwork that realistically replicates the large lunar orb in all its glory.

Held from 17th June and running till 5th August 2023, the breathtaking installation is presented by UK-based artist, Luke Jeram, who first displayed the artwork in 2016. There are multiple copies of it, with the first in Malaysia hovering over the hallowed halls of the Borneo Cultures Museum.

Upon stepping into the museum, you’ll immediately be greeted by the colossal moon sculpture that’s suspended high above the floor. The sculpture measures 7 metres in diameter, and bathes the exhibition space in soft lunar light. The lunar replica is so meticulously crafted, with detailed crevices and crater, that’ll have you wondering if the moon was called down to Earth just for this magical exhibition.

Based on detailed NASA imagery of the moon’s surface taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, each centimetre of the lunar replica represents 5 kilometres of the moon’s surface. It guarantees a spellbinding close-up of the moon for all of those who gaze upon it.

Besides just snapping photos of the giant suspended orb, there is a complementing exhibit to discover that weaves together local myths and lunar traditions, and sheds light on the profound connection between humanity and the cosmos. As you wander through the gallery space, you’ll find interactive displays of the moon’s geological features, lunar imageries, moon phases, historical significance, and its cultural impact on civilisation.

It also showcases the seamless intertwining of astronomy and art with information on the latest advancements in lunar science, highlighting new research and discoveries about the moon.

The tinkling of celestial music in the background by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones fills the halls, fully transporting you to a lunar landscape.
