Muara Arts in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is getting a new public art gallery this November.
Located in Medan Pasar, Muara Arts will spotlight modern and contemporary Malaysian and Southeast Asian art through exhibitions, learning programmes, and publications.
Here’s what you can expect on a visit to the upcoming gallery:
What is Muara Arts?

Art may live in galleries, but it should never feel like it belongs only to a select few.
This sentiment flows through Muara Arts, an upcoming gallery in KL’s Medan Pasar whose name means “estuary” or “river mouth” in Malay, symbolising a meeting point where art, creativity, and ideas come together. Coincidentally, Medan Pesar sits at the meeting point of the Klang and Gombak rivers in KL.

The gallery occupies six restored Art Deco shophouses dating back to the 1930s, spanning approximately 20,000sqft in a historic market square located in the heart of KL. Designed by Dr Tan LM Architect and Sean Carpenter of Linear Vista, the adaptive reuse project retains the shophouses’ historic character while introducing museum-standard facilities.
The gallery is also part of a wider cultural revitalisation of Medan Pasar, which will eventually bring outdoor events, cafes, restaurants, retail shops, and other cultural spaces to the area. A separate Muara Arts Theatre, an intimate proscenium auditorium with a capacity of around 500, is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2029.
When does Muara Arts open?
Muara Arts will open to the public on 1st November. However, the gallery has yet to announce its daily opening hours, with further visitor information expected closer to the launch.
An inaugural exhibition that explores Southeast Asian art
The gallery’s opening will open with the launch of its inaugural exhibition, A–Z of Southeast Asian Art: A Critical Dictionary. The exhibition will run until 4th April 2027, giving visitors around five months to explore the works on display.

The exhibition takes its cue from Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen’s ongoing work, The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia. Structured like an A-to-Z dictionary, it brings together works by more than 40 artists, with each exploring a term connected to the region’s culture, ecology, geography, history, or politics.

Visitors can expect a wide range of art mediums on display, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, installations, videos, and works on paper.
The complete list of participating artists and further exhibition details is expected to be announced in the coming months.
How to get tickets to Muara Arts?
Tickets to Muara Arts will go on sale on 1st September, with admission starting from RM12. A live countdown on the Muara Arts website is ticking down to the ticket release, so keen visitors can check exactly how long is left before bookings open.
Further details, including ticket categories and the official booking process, have yet to be announced.
