New movies in Malaysia in 2025
We may never get a blockbuster year close to the summer of Barbenheimer. But the lineup of new movies in 2025 that are hitting the big screens in Malaysia is looking real promising.
Standouts are still the universe-extenders and franchise sequels, in particular Paddington 3, Jurassic World 4, and another Avatar film. There are also films with fresh stories and casts that the cinema has been lacking last year – we’re looking at Bong Joon Ho’s adaptation of Mickey17 starring Robert Pattinson and more Marvel movies featuring scenes that feel very, very close to home.

1. Paddington In Peru

The lovable Paddington Bear returns with his latest adventure in the third installment of the widely popular franchise. Titled Paddington In Peru, the live-action comedy film follows the little bear – voiced by Ben Wishaw – on the search for his missing Aunt Lucy. With his adopted Brown family in tow, they get thrown into an unexpected adventure through the Amazon rainforest and the mountains of Peru by a mysterious force.
2. Wolf Man

Start your year of movie adventure on a freaky note with the 2025 reboot of Wolf Man, which stars Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott. Following his estranged father’s mysterious disappearance, Blake returns to his childhood home with his wife and daughter where the family is attacked by a deadly werewolf during a full moon.
After being clawed on the arm by the beast, Blake finds himself slowly transforming into something horrifying as the night stretches on.
3. Mickey 17

What do you get when you put together the Academy Award-winning South Korean director Bong Joon Ho and former brooding vampire-cum-batman actor Robert Pattinson? A masterpiece, hopefully.
Mickey 17, the film adaptation of Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel Mickey7, is the Parasite’s director next project which stars the Twilight actor as a disposable employee – whose body gets regenerated and brought back to life whenever his job winds up killing him – sent on an expedition to colonise a distant world.
4. Love Hurts

Everyone’s favourite human Ke Huy Quan stars as Marvin Gable in Love Hurts, an American action-comedy film directed by Jonathan Eusebio. Gable gets thrust into his past life as a violent hitman after his former partner-in-crime, whom he had left for dead, returns. To make things worse, Gable’s crime-lord brother Knuckles, is also hunting him down ruthlessly.
5. Captain America: Brave New World

The first of the Marvel films on the big screen in 2025 will be Captain America: Brave New World. And a new world it is, for we’ll no longer be seeing the beloved Steven Rogers donning that star-and-stripe suit.
In his place, the trusty superhero formerly known as The Falcon Sam Wilson – played by Anthony Mackie – is taking on Cap’s mantle and shield to fight against Sidewinder and Thaddeus Ross as the not-so-friendly red hulk in the upcoming film. Needless to say, we can hardly wait.
6. Snow White

It’s been a long time coming but the live-action remake of Disney’s classic animated film Snow White is nearing her return to the big screen. The Ballad of Songbirds’ Rachel Zegler plays the fair-maiden Snow White while Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot stars as the Evil Queen in the modern remake of the Grimm Brothers’ 1812 tale, fighting to take the top spot as the Fairest of them All. Time to whistle while we work.
7. Minecraft Movie

The video game is being transformed into a live-action movie, A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. Four misfits are pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland called Overworld.
Together, they embark on a quest to head back to the real world.
8. Drop

American thriller Drop centers around a widowed mother Violet is on one of her first dates in a long while in a glitzy restaurant, when she is bombarded with threatening texts instructing her to kill her charming date, or her sister and her five-year-old son at home will be murdered.
9. The Amateur

CIA cryptographer Charles Heller’s life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack in the new action-thriller The Amateur. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he blackmails them into training him to become a field operative before setting out to track down those responsible for his wife’s death.
10. The Accountant 2

Sequel to The Accountant which was released in 2016, The Accountant 2 sees Ben Affleck reprising his role as Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant who uses his brilliant mind and illegal methods to solve the murder of the Treasury chief.
11. Thunderbolts

Marvel’s second offering of the year is one that Malaysians will be thrilled to catch on the big screen, especially after seeing snippets of iconic Malaysian backdrop in the movie’s trailer. Thunderbolts will see Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, Taskmaster, Red Guardian, and John Waler team up to form an unexpected super villains-turned-heroes group for American government missions.
12. Lilo & Stitch

Another live-action Disney remake to keep your eyes out for, Lilo & Stitch will have everyone weeping tears over the Ohana bond between an orphaned Hawaiian girl named Lilo, and a cheeky blue koala-like alien named Stitch.
13. Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning

Yet another sequel to the famous American action-spy film, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning is the 8th film of the long-running franchise with Tom Cruise back to portray everyone’s favourite Impossible Mission Force (IMF) agent, Ethan Hunt.
14. Karate Kid: Legends

Coming back with its sixth film in the franchise is Karate Kid: Legends, and reunited in the movie are franchise stars Ralph Machio and Jackie Chan who will reprise their iconic roles as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han. The new student in the movie, Li Fong, is a young skilled fighter in Beijing who moves to Brooklyn. Grappling to adapt to his new life, Li finds solace by training in martial arts.
15. Ballerina

Ana de Armes is taking a leaf out of Keanu Reeves’s book in John Wick’s spin-off film Ballerina. De Armes stars as a ballerina-turned-female assassin out to take vengeance on those who had murdered her father – not a puppy this time. As the movie follows the ballerina-assassin training in the traditions of Ruska Roma, look out for a glimpse of John Wick, who is appearing as a cameo in the film.
16. Elio

Disney’s and Pixar’s Elio tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who gets transported into space by aliens and is mistaken to be Earth’s ambassador on another planet. After feeling like an underdog around humans for the longest time, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.
17. How To Train Your Dragon

2025’s How To Train Your Dragon marks DreamWorks Animation’s first live production, as well as their first remake of the animated film trilogy. The film follows a young Viking named Hiccup, who forms an unlikely bond with Toothless, a Night Fury dragon.

Led by seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton himself, F1 invites audiences into the world of cars roaring and engine revving. The cast is a Hollywood heavyweight one with Brad Pitt taking the reins as a former racer who is persuaded to mentor a new driving prodigy, played by Damson Idris.
19. Jurassic World Rebirth

We humans can’t seem to be able to get enough of dinosaurs, do we? The Jurassic franchise is returning, yet again, with its seventh film called Jurassic World Rebirth, set five years post-Jurassic World Dominion.
The larger-than-life movie features an all-star ensemble that includes Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, whose characters find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery.
20. Superman

We’ll miss Henry Cavill sorely, but the dawn of the new Man of Steel is nigh – and we cannot deny that we are excited. The Superman reboot stars David Corenswet as journalist Clark Kent and his superhero alias Superman, on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage on the destroyed planet of Krypton from where he was born.
21. The Fantastic Four: First Step

Perhaps the most anticipated Marvel reboot – and the second one at that, after the 2016 reboot – The Fantastic Four: First Step sounds promising with the introduction of the new cast, most particularly Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards. The film has also been teased to be a retro-futuristic version that’s set in an alternate universe of the main MCU movies. All very intriguing indeed.
22. Avatar: Fire & Ash

The Avatar franchise is wasting no time in cranking out the rest of its movies in its five-part saga, especially after that 13-year gap between the first movie and its sequel. Director James Cameron is bringing audiences back to the stunning world of Pandora in Avatar: Fire and Ash – this time with new biomes and new clans. Not much has been revealed about the plot, but one thing’s for sure, we will be mesmerised.
