Forest Cloud: Penang-Based Coffee & Matcha Shop’s New Industrial-Style Flagship Store In PJ

Forest Cloud in Petaling Jaya

Good things are meant to be shared. In the case of Malaysia’s food haven Penang, that would mean yummy ones.

Since 2014, Forest Cloud Beverage Company has grown to become a significant name in the scene. More than just a chic cafe in Penang, it boasts a spacious coffee shop, roastery, and experience store – a combination of a coffee academy, R&D coffee lab, and even a coffee machine “clinic”. A decade later, the company is finally bringing their top-notch roasts and brews to Klang Valley, with their very first flagship store in Petaling Jaya.

Familiar with the coffee brand’s beans and matcha powders in Penang already, we jumped at the opportunity to visit the Forest Cloud Flagship Store in PJ to bring you this review.

Ambience at Forest Cloud Flagship Store

Forest Cloud - flagship

Forest Cloud Flagship Store isn’t your cutesy, sun-dappled, artfully-driven coffee shop. Nestled in the industrial enclave of PJ, the building of the cafe blends in with the stripped-down look of the district – the aesthetics seep into the cafe’s spacious interior as well.

Forest Cloud - cafe

Minimalist in that edgy “Welcome to my stylish warehouse” sort of way, the flagship store exudes a charmingly fuss-free look where the barista bar takes centre stage in a sea of concrete floors, steel fixtures, distressed metal beams, and weathered wood. The large windows and tall ceilings offer a certain warmth and airiness to the otherwise sterile space.

And there is good reason – the coffee here deserves the spotlight.

Behind the sleek exposed brick coffee counter, you’ll find baristas pouring, pulling, frothing, and whisking away with an arsenal of equipment before them.

Of course, these beverages can be gladly made to-go, but they are best experienced when you take the time to sit down and enjoy your meticulously measured pulls and expertly made caffeinated drinks.

Forest Cloud - merch

Serious coffee drinkers who find themselves thoroughly impressed by Forest Cloud’s brews and beverages will be delighted to know that there’s a corner in the cafe to shop for roasted beans, house-made concentrates for matcha and hojicha, coconut milk cartons, as well as the company’s merchandise like coffee accessories and tumblers.

The flagship store will also host coffee brewing and tasting workshops every weekend soon.

Beverages at Forest Cloud Flagship Store

Forest Cloud - drinks

Thoughtful pour-overs, simple blacks, milk lattes, and frothy ceremonial-grade matcha drinks have all made the menu here.

Simple as the menu may be at the moment, the trust we felt of leaving it all to the pros – who were more than happy to whisk, brew, and steam us our array of orders – was worth more than viral Instagram-driven drinks that forgo well-executed standards.

Forest Cloud - filter

The variety of single-origin pour-overs on their menu seems to suggest a clear expertise of the cafe, so we ordered the Don Eli Yabai (RM35) filter coffee with beans harvested in Costa Rica.

The aroma leaned towards the lighter side, with an ever-so-slight twang of zestiness resembling that of muscat grapes and yellow peaches, enough to mask any bitterness there may be. It isn’t the strongest option, but the flavour itself is exceedingly addictive, and a great option for black or filter coffee novices.

The Hot Latte (RM14) was equally as good – it’s what you’d expect from a satisfying warm cup of quality joe.

Forest Cloud - matcha

The cafe’s tea latte selections, particularly their range of matcha beverages, are no slouch either.

We went for an Iced Matcha Latte (RM19) with our choice of the ceremonial-grade Miyama – described to embody an intense umami flavour, a slight nutty pistachio fragrance, and a sweet undertone.

Forest Cloud - iced matcha

Our concoction was served looking stunning, to say the least. The whisked matcha formed an impressively frothy bed, its deep green hue slowly bleeding into the layer of coconut milk. Each sip was lush, buttery, and full-bodied. This remained pretty consistent even towards the end when the drink was eventually watered down by the melting of the ice cubes.

Peckish? Supplement your drinks with a small selection of pastries displayed by the counter, which are just enough to fuel you through your work when paired with your caffeine.

The verdict

Forest Cloud - barista

Those in search of a flawlessly executed pour-over and not-too-sweet matcha drinks would find Forest Cloud Flagship Store in PJ to be an excellent new haunt for coffee runs – and also a spot to work at or yap with friends over brews.

The interiors are welcoming enough, with plus points when it comes to the ample seating area. The thing we loved the most was how the coffee shop kept to what they are known for even back in Penang. Instead of conforming to superficial aesthetics and fleeting trends, their passion for the art of brewing and coffee-making remains evident with the exceptional quality of their coffee and beverages available here in PJ too.
