22,242 new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, 18th August

The number of Malaysians who are fully vaccinated has now hit the 11 million mark, with 11,400,456 individuals administered their second dose as of 17th August 2021. Despite this, Covid-19 cases have yet to take a tumble as we record another new high of 22,242 new cases in Malaysia on 18th August.

KL and Selangor recorded 8,445 cases

Of the 22,242 new cases recorded today, 18th August, Selangor once again reported the highest number of cases in a state nationwide, with 6,858 new cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur, with a total of 1,587 new cases.

Most states are recording high daily counts breaching the 1,000 mark too, including Sabah (2,413), Penang (1,867), Kedah (1,852), Johor (1,587), Sarawak (1,403) Kelantan (1,351) and Perak (1,036).

The only areas where cases have managed to stay below the 100s are Labuan (5), Putrajaya (25) and Perlis (50).

The addition of 22,242 new confirmed Covid-19 cases today sets yet another dreaded record high in the country, surpassing the 22,000 mark for daily cases recorded for the first time too.

Malaysia has recorded 1,466,512 total Covid-19 cases since the pandemic struck.

Previously on 12th August, there were 21,688 cases recorded, and on 13th August, 21,468 new cases recorded.

As of yesterday, the nation’s overall infectivity rate stood at 1.04, as shared by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Meanwhile, vaccination rates in the country continue to accelerate, with 525,111 vaccine doses administered yesterday, 17th August, as reported by JKJAV.

28,837,742 individuals in the country have now been jabbed with at least one vaccine dose, with 53.4% of this total receiving at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Today’s new cases pushes the number of infections past the 22,000 mark for the first time in the country. So while more businesses are opening up and SOPs are loosened for the fully vaccinated, we should continue to be mindful of Covid-19 safety measures whenever we’re out.
