Crayon Shin-Chan Experience: An Exhibition With Five Photo Zones & Cheeky Themed Foods

Crayon Shin-Chan Experience in KL

Cartoons can be a delightful escape, even for us grown-ups with a 9 to 5. An animated character that many of us adore, no matter how old we are, is Crayon Shin-Chan. Red tee, yellow shorts, and expressive eyebrows – the pint-sized character has our hearts.

Those who can’t get enough of him and his cheeky antics can head to the Crayon Shin-Chan Experience. From photo zones with a van Gogh twist to a cafe with a themed Shin-Chan menu, the exhibition at Pavilion Bukit Jalil brings the beloved characters and sets from the cartoon to life for a major dose of nostalgia.

All you need to know about Crayon Shin-Chan Experience

Crayon Shin-Chan Experience is located on the third floor of the mall. There are three parts to the exhibition: the exhibition itself, a themed cafe, and a merchandise area. It’s open from 14th September till 29th December 2024, every day from 10am to 10pm.

Take photos with Shin-Chan & his companions at the exhibition

Crayon Shin-Chan living room

The exhibition comprises five photo zones, with your journey beginning with a realistic recreation of Shin-Chan’s living room. It’s even complete with a low Japanese-style table that the Nohara family gather around for meals and a television set from the cartoon.

Take a closer look at the wallpaper of the space, as it draws inspiration from Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night. True to the cartoon, a sculpture of mischievous Shin-Chan armed with a paint palette greets visitors while his parents and little sister look on in amused terror.

The next zone is also inspired by a van Gogh painting. Sculptures of Shin-Chan and his adorable doggo Shiro stand among sunflowers, against a backdrop of impressionist clouds.

You’ll meet more characters at the third zone, where cutouts of Shin-Chan, his family, and his schoolmates are scattered around the area for photo ops. Likewise, a director-mode Shin-Chan sits in front of the Petronas Twin Towers in the following room, which will be a special photo spot for Malaysian fans of the manga and anime series. There’s even a camping chair next to him that visitors are welcomed to sit on.

CRAYON SHINCHAN EXPERIENCE

Your exhibition journey will conclude in a narrow hallway, where framed photos of memorable moments from the anime are hung to take you on a trip down memory lane. There’s also a cheeky photo corner here, of a buns-out Shin-Chan in a The Starry Night-inspired hallway.

Shop for merch at the retail area

Like with all good exhibitions and galleries, there’s a retail area for visitors to snag merch after their exhibition visit. We found everything keepsake-worthy, from stationery like bookmarks (RM39), stickers (RM19), and postcards (RM15), to socks (RM35), jackets, and jewellery.

For something to dress up your office or personal desk with, bring home an acrylic stand (RM65), figurine (RM49.90) or cushion (RM79) of Shin-Chan. Other finds on the shelves include passport covers (RM55) and drawstring pouches (RM79).

CRAYON SHINCHAN EXPERIENCE - PHOTOBOOTH

Tucked within the retail area is a Crayon Shin-Chan photo booth, with four Shin-Chan frames to choose from. Each printed copy costs RM20, with additional prints for you or your bestie priced at RM10. Do note that the booth only accepts cash notes.

Munch on themed foods at the anime cafe

A cafe with food and drinks themed around Crayon Shin-Chan is also part of the exhibition. It serves a collection of Japanese mains, beverages, and desserts, which you can enjoy in the Shin-Chan decked-out cafe with a huge screen airing episodes of the anime for diners.

CRAYON SHINCHAN EXPERIENCE - FOOD

We went with the Shin-Chan Moonlit Curry Delight (RM25.90) purely because of how playful it was – the rice in the dish was shaped like Shin-Chan’s bum. Taste-wise, it was a simple and satisfying Japanese curry dish, paired with a handful of karaage chicken.

The just-as-fun Nap Time Burger (RM25.90) sandwiches two chicken patties between charcoal buns, with star-shaped hashed browns served on the side. We were pleasantly surprised by how nicely grilled the patties were, which had a nice barbecue aroma and taste.

As for drinks, these are priced at RM16.90 each and come with a cupsleeve of a Crayon Shin-Chan character. They offer a refreshing lineup – Ribena Longan Sparkle, Mango Calamansi Splash, and Zesty Orange Fizz – that pairs well with the mains, as well as a Oolong Fantasy that stands apart from the rest as it has jelly bits in the tea-based drink.

CRAYON SHINCHAN EXPERIENCE - DESSERTS

Leave room for desserts, as there are the Choco Shin-Chan Pops (RM11.80) – a pair of nostalgic chocolate popsicle sticks with marshmallows served on a plate – and Shiro Dreaming Pudding (RM15.80) that has a Shiro-shaped jelly made of soya bean.

Ticket prices for the Crayon Shin-Chan Experience

Tickets for the Crayon Shin-Chan Experience can now be purchased online at Ticket2u.

There are different Souvenir Card Packages offered that start from RM25. Your choice of package will depend on the freebies you want to bring home, as they all include an admission ticket to the photo zone:

  • RM25: Photo zone admission, themed beverage, and coaster
  • RM50: Photo zone admission, themed main dish, glass cup, activity card, and collection card
  • RM80: Photo zone admission, themed beverage, themed main dish, themed dessert, coaster, glass cup, activity card, and collection card

We recommend going for the RM50 package if the most expensive package has your wallet twitching, as it gets you an activity card that will make your exhibition experience even more interactive. You’ll have to sift out stamp zones within and around the exhibition and stamp the locations on a map on the card. Upon completion, you’ll be given a collectible collection card.
