Detective Conan 30th Anniversary Exhibition in KL
Start practising your best “ah-le-le?!” impressions. An exhibition for the wildly successful series, Detective Conan, is now open in Malaysia with eight zones that’ll make you want to put on your sleuthing hats – or spectacles and red bow tie, in this case.
The rich 30-year history of the celebrated manga and anime, and the complex universe of the 17-going-on-7 Shinicho Kudo, are explored in detail at Kuala Lumpur’s latest exhibition for the Detective Conan 30th Anniversary, which opens from 6th December 2024 to 16th February 2025.
Here’s everything to know about it.
A deep dive into the Conan universe
With nearly 100 objects – including IRL props and comic strips from fan-favourite moments of the series – the Detective Conan 30th Anniversary exhibition is worth a visit. It’s now open to the public at KL’s Pavilion Bukit Jalil after debuting in Japan and making overseas stops in cities such as Taipei, Seoul, and Bangkok.
The exhibition takes visitors through eight zones, also called Chapters, beginning with an Introduction area that traces the history of the series, from its debut in 1994 to reaching over 100 volumes and having a widely-popular animated TV series and film spin-offs as of 2024.
The exhibition also has quirky displays with fun tidbits about the series and stamp zones.
What follows are more dedicated zones that highlight Detective Conan’s significance in pop culture and the different aspects of Kudo’s life.
Each zone features character profiles and information posters that open up the universe to both new and loyal fans alike. Expect to spend around an hour thoroughly exploring each corner of the exhibition, as there are plenty to read and look at.
What to expect at Detective Conan 30th Anniversary exhibition
One room is given over to popular Conan quotes and another showcases various hints and cryptic messages from the series’ most mystery-laden moments.
Yet another room is dedicated to Conan’s most notable rival, Kid the Phantom Thief, where a photo op with the gentleman thief Kaito Kid and comic strips of his appearance in the series await fans.
Of particular interest is the room set aside for Conan’s foes – the CONAN’s Hannin. There’s a “hall of fame” wall of over 150 villains from the Conan universe that’s worth lingering at.
But the true centrepiece here is a display of tools used by the series’ criminals in outrageous ways. Seemingly innocent, but destructive, weapons include plastic bottles, a wig, and an ashtray.
All the tools, as well as other exhibited objects in the exhibition, are labeled with individual plaques that detail which Detective Conan comic book volume the item features in. This will come in handy for anyone looking for more context as a new fan, or just to help jog the memory.
On the other side of things, the CONAN’s Love zone explores the relationships that take place in the series.
They include the squeal-worthy romance between Kudo and Ran and the strong bonds of the Hattori family.
The exhibition concludes with a no-photography zone that brings important parts from the studio of the series’ writer, Gosho Aoyama, to life, and a film showcase that takes viewers through a bite-sized timeline of Detective Conan’s history.
And, of course, a retail shop carrying character-themed collectibles and Malaysia-exclusive merchandise. Shop acrylic stands (RM115), T-shirts (from RM69), and keychains (RM40) to bring home a keepsake.
