Bean Jr.’s Newly Released Durian Tau Fu Fah Comes Topped With D24, Musang King & Gold Flakes

Bean Jr. releases Durian Tau Fu Fah

We know it is the durian season when June rolls around. This also means it is the time of the year when we see shops in Malaysia rolling out wild durian culinary creations – like this local restaurant’s strange yet enticing Durian Ramen.

The dessert shop Bean Jr. has jumped on the durian bandwagon too with their newly released Durian Tau Fu Fah, a clever pairing of a Malaysian traditional dessert and the King of Fruits. We decided to head down to an outlet to try the dessert, which comes in two flavours: Durian D24 and Musang King.

Durian cendol is no news to us, but we have yet to see a durian and tau foo fah combo until now, with Bean Jr. introducing this innovative fusion.

The tau foo fah dessert comes in two flavours. The Durian D24 Tau Fu Fah (RM23.80) is a colourful interplay of shaved ice, off-white tau foo fah, green cendol, red beans, and yellow D24 durian. While it might look similar to the classic durian cendol, the tau foo fah adds a delightful veil to the dessert with its silky texture, mild sweetness, and nuttiness.

The other flavour, Musang King Tau Fu Fah (RM25.80), comprises layers of tau foo fah, yellow jelly, sago, and mini taro balls. The last layer of tau foo fah is beautifully placed in the cup, and crowned with a Musang King durian flesh and a sprinkle of gold flakes that helps finish off the layers with a finesse.

Here’s what we thought

The hefty cup of Musang King Tau Fu Fah might look simple, but it is a symphony of textures and flavours. The subtle taste of tau foo fah blends well with the rich and sweet durian.

The tau foo fah was soft and silky that it effortlessly broke apart in our mouth, and the creamy durian quickly joined in as it melted. Be sure to scoop up the taro balls and sago with the tau foo fah and durian, as it offered a satisfying chew and brought the dessert experience to the next level.

The Durian D24 Tau Fu Fah also gave us a delectable experience. It reminded us of durian cendol but with an enhanced texture profile thanks to the smooth and velvety tau foo fah.

While the taste of durian was nice and strong to satisfy any durian lover, the tau foo fah and red bean in the cup added a nice nutty touch and helped balance the durian’s rich flavour in the dessert.

Durian and tau foo fah isn’t all that a bizarre combination, but together they are a refreshing duo. If you are concerned about the pungent smell and test of durian, fret not – this dessert is a well-balanced and refreshing thirst-quencher suitable for Malaysia’s recent hotter-than-usual weather. So order one when you chance upon one of the 12 Bean Jr. outlets in Klang Valley.
