Tucked amongst a row of old shophouses along Jalan Tun HS Lee in Kuala Lumpur, this vintage cafe is a mix of both old and new. Upon entering this two-storey space, you’ll find that it has been thoughtfully and beautifully revamped.

Though Kafe Kleptokrat retains an old-school charm with its tiled floors, chipped red bricked walls, and steely railings, the space is also reminiscent of Bali with the bountiful leafy plants, patio umbrellas, and the cafe’s highlight – a large swimming pool that stretches along the length of its courtyard.

The cafe’s striking ambience aside, their menu boasts an extensive range of dishes that are beautifully plated. This includes Melbourne-inspired breakfast to local set meals served in a traditional tiffin containers.

Go for their Lontong menu, particularly the Soto Ayam (RM20) – a traditional chicken broth dish that consists of shredded chicken, rice cubes and fried glass noodles – which is a crowd-favourite dish. Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah (RM23) has also received raving reviews from patrons for its fragrant flavours and gorgeous plating.

Non-meat eaters need not worry about having to make special requests. Kafe Kleptokrat has a decent amount of vegetarian and vegan dishes, for instance Lontong Vegan (RM22) and Nasi Lemak Tofu Rendang (RM28).

Apart from their hearty and savoury meals, the cafe also serves a variety of desserts – including Ondeh-Ondeh Ice Cream (RM16) and Azuki Pulut Hitam with Vanilla Ice Cream and Santan Pandan (RM10), as well as a plethora of baked goods such as cheesecakes, muffins, and tarts.

Not falling short on their beverages, the cafe whips up coffee, smoothies, kombuchas, and interestingly, a selection of refreshing mocktails and coolers, which are priced at RM15 per glass.

If you plan to come with a group or have a special get-together in mind, Kafe Kleptokrat offers a Tiffin Set (RM69 per person), which comprises a choice of nasi kamboo – butter rice with raisins and almonds – or nasi lemak. These are served in vintage tiffin carriers, and patrons able to pick three mains, including well-loved local staples such as masak lemak daging salai and sambal sotong.

Beverages are included in the set as well. To avoid disappointment, ensure that you call at least 48 hours prior to your intended visit to gorge on this set.
