Noff Coffee in Seri Kembangan
We’re not technically coffee addicts, but let’s just say coffee is permanently part of the daily routine. It has to be a dark roast, full-bodied, with no syrup or whipped cream. So, when we came across NOff Coffee’s speciality coffee pairing menu that brings together cold brew with soba and espresso with rice, we were – as Gen Z would say – shooketh.
Skeptical but also intrigued, we decided to give these unusual coffee-based dishes a go. Here’s how it went down.
Speciality coffee pairing using the in-house coffee blend
NOff Coffee’s speciality coffee pairing menu is said to be the first of its kind in Malaysia. The selection is concise, featuring two rice dishes, a noodle dish, and a bread dish.
Each item is crafted using the shop’s own coffee blend: NOff NOff, which has caramel notes, and NOffee with milk chocolate and fruity notes.
Espresso Rice Bowl
Espresso Rice Bowl (RM26) is Japanese-accented with bonito flakes, raw egg yolk, and minced chicken. The real star is, of course, the NOffee espresso soya sauce on the side.
To indulge, you’ll have to pour this dark, aromatic concoction over the bowl and give everything a good mix.
Espresso with soya sauce sounds like an April Fool’s prank or a Halloween dare, but somehow, this marriage worked. We could taste the roasted coffee flavour but none of the sharp bitterness that could have made the rice taste burnt. Instead, it was nicely mellowed by the umami soya sauce and bonito flakes.
Coffee Soba 2.0
Coffee Soba 2.0 (RM29) takes the original Coffee Soba to the next level, adding tiger prawns, fish roe, and nori to enhance the dish’s umami depth.
The NOff NOff cold brew had a more robust taste than the espresso soya sauce, packing a bitter punch with a whisper of dashi. We ended up calling this dish “uncle soba” or “adult soba” because of its intense kopi-o-like taste.
On that note, we found it refreshing – and somewhat comforting – to savour.
Bread & Coffee Butter
The experience had been good, so we added the Bread & Coffee Butter (RM16) to our order.
The coffee butter melted into the sourdough bread with a gentle press, spreading out effortlessly. It had this smooth, buttery coffee latte taste with a little salty kick from the pink salt on top. The sourdough was also pretty good – not too tangy, with a perfect crumb and nice chewiness.
