Red zones in Malaysia have seen a significant jump over the past few days with the figure now standing at 21, and the Petaling district in Selangor is one of the most affected COVID-19 zones in question.
However, the positive effects of MCO are now starting to show after 3 weeks since its implementation. And it appears that Petaling Jaya is one of the few districts to see results. It was reported yesterday, 7th April 2020, that the 3rd most affected district in Malaysia with nearly 300 confirmed COVID-19 cases has reported zero cases in the past 2 days.
Achieved by authorities’ efforts and residents’ cooperation
According to The Sun Daily, Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal has come forth to express his happiness regarding the favorable results the district has yielded. He continued to say that the tightened rules for MCO phase 2 have proven to be more effective in controlling the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Faisal gave a special shoutout to his fellow comrades who are all hard at work to ensure the MCO is being followed. He said that the good results serve as a motivation to PDRM and military officers who have to carry out their duties, rain or shine. He said, “for all the adversity and challenges they face, their efforts are not in vain”.
Credit also has to be given to residents staying in the Petaling district as it could not have been done if they didn’t show their cooperation with the authorities.
New SOP for MCO to better tackle COVID-19
While it’s great that the country has begun seeing improvements in terms of the number of COVID-19 cases, there are still many red zones nationwide that are in worrying states.
In order to address this, the government will come out with a new standard operating procedure (SOP) to prevent COVID-19 from further spreading. The SOP will also highlight new measures to be taken during MCO.

According to The Star, there may be new rules in place for red zone districts. As for those residing in green zones, the government is considering whether to allow movement. However, this decision does come with risks as free movement may trigger another wave of the virus spreading.
The SOP is also to prepare the nation for post-MCO times as it’s crucial that we don’t fall back and lose all the progress we’ve made.

At a time like this, news of Petaling district’s achievement may just put our hearts at ease and give us a sigh of relief. If the densely-populated Petaling could continue maintaining their zero COVID-19 stats, then we can only assume that it’ll just be a matter of time before other districts yield as good of a result of theirs.
The most crucial step is to follow the MCO, cooperate with authorities, and stay home. If Malaysians can band together to do this, we’ll ride out the COVID-19 pandemic in no time.
