Pharmacy Staff Foots Bill For Mum Who Gave Up Child’s Medication As She Was Unable To Afford It

Pharmacy staff helps mother and sick toddler out

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on many individuals’ sources of income. But Malaysians have been trying their best to help out one another so we can all get through these tough times together. Showing just how caring Malaysians have been towards their communities at this time, this mother and her sick toddler in Terengganu met with a kind pharmacy staff at a clinic who stepped in and paid for her child’s medication. The mother had initially given up the medication, as she wasn’t able to afford it.

Medications for child amounted to over RM60

On 23rd June 2021, netizen @anne_nma took to her Twitter account to share what had happened while she was visiting a 24-hour medical centre, Pusat Perubatan Intan, in Terengganu with her father the day before.

She had been waiting just by the entrance of the clinic for her father to be treated when she overheard a woman conversing with an unnamed pharmacy staff at the medicine pick-up counter.

The woman had brought her young child – whom @anne_nma deduced to be just over 1 year old – to the medical centre, presumably for consultation. Medication costs for her child totalled just over RM60. She had opted to pay for it with a government healthcare card, which is only accepted at certain government clinics. As such, the pharmacy staff had no choice but to tell her that the clinic could not accept her card.

To this, @anne_nma described the disappointment seen on the woman’s face upon having to give up medication for her child, as she didn’t have enough money to pay for it.

The mother of the child was just about to leave the clinic with her husband and child on their motorcycle when the pharmacy staff stopped her. She told the mother, “It’s okay. Just take the medicine, and keep your card. I’ll pay. Your poor child isn’t feeling well.”

Her show of kindness, however, took the mother off guard, who insisted that she cannot let the staff do so. Nonetheless, the pharmacy staff insisted that the mother accept her kind gesture so that she could return home with the medication for her son.

After the family left the clinic, @anne_nma, who had overheard the whole conversation, offered to help pay for the medication as well. But the pharmacy staff said that she would like to pay for it, as she felt bad for the mother and her child.

Because of her response, @anne_nma hailed her as a “hero”.

Netizens touched by pharmacy staff’s kind deed

The story had numerous netizens coming out to applaud the pharmacy staff for helping out the mother and her child, with over 13,000 retweets and 16,000 likes amassed on @anne_nma’s Twitter post at the time of writing.

A Twitter user tweeted, “As we are struggling during this pandemic, more heroes are emerging. And as it says, heroes do not have to wear capes. I learnt a lot here.”
