Stunning evening rain clouds and sunset in Penang
As most of us are cooped up at home waiting for the pandemic to get under control, expansive views of the sky have been a balm to our souls. Thanks to the Internet, we’re able to enjoy impressive shots by talented individuals even while we’re staying safe indoors.
This includes shots taken by a man in Penang, who shared photos of fluffy clouds and a brilliant sunset at Straits Quay – which had netizens impressed by the contrast between the water and sky that looked like it was “split” by the sunset.Â
Man captures clouds and sunset over George Town, Penang
On 25th June 2021, Gerry Ooi took to Facebook group Penang Walkabouts to share photos he captured from Straits Quay Promenade the day before, on 24th June.
The evening rain clouds and glowing sunset he witnessed showed a breathtaking view of heavy, fluffy clouds over the Strait Of Malacca, with the sunset just barely peeking through under them.

As the blue waters and even-bluer clouds and sky are set apart by the warm hues of the sunset, it almost looks like the sun is attempting to pierce through a slit.
The scene seems straight out of a dramatic landscape painting, due to the vibrant colours and distinct contrast in the image.

Ooi called the sight both beautiful and terrifying – aptly describing the dark clouds hovering over the orange-tinted sky.

Even with the sun almost disappearing below the horizon – taking away with it the orange notes in the sky – there still appears to be a clearly defined split at the horizon, allowing what’s left of the sun’s rays to come through.
The whole scene had netizens cheering on the amazing display of contrast in the photo, with some calling it “National Geography worthy”.

Another netizen, Feliscia Ng, took to the same Facebook group to share what clouds looked like the next day, 25th June, around 9AM.
She witnessed low-hanging, tsunami–like clouds over Penang, which typically signal incoming strong winds. The scenes of the sky early this morning had several netizens making comparisons to the apocalyptic film, The Day After Tomorrow. Many also said called it both beautiful and scary at the same time.

Nature phenomenons often leave us spellbound, such as when Penangites were treated to blazing red skies and the appearance of double rainbows before. And all we have to do is to stop and spare a moment to take in their beauty and be awed by the sight – much like these Facebook users who were lucky enough to snap photos of these rain clouds in Penang.
We appreciate them for sharing the photos online, so many more can enjoy these stunning sights.
