When it comes to helping each other, Malaysians are known to generously give a helping hand to those in need. This has been proven across social media these past few weeks with NGOs feeding the homeless and communities crafting protective gear for those at the frontlines during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The same heartwarming community spirit can also be seen in Penampang, Sabah, as residents have reportedly been leaving out free produce for their neighbours to take.

Community spirit high among Penampang residents

Penampang is a suburb town located in the West of Sabah that has since picked up a lot of media attention due to the generosity of its residents.

Pictures have floated around various social media channels showing fruits, vegetables and even cooked food being displayed in front of homes and offered for free.

Residents can have their pick of any produce such as bananas, betik kampung, bird’s eye chili, and even kangkung. These are all either hung up on metal fences or put out on tables which were also accompanied by cardboard signages attached next to them.

Malaysians across the country praised the good deeds of the Penampang residents. The post itself, shared by Alex Leow on Zero Waste Malaysia, has already amassed 532 shares since it’s first posting last week.

During this difficult time, it is important for all of us to remember that there are others out there who are less fortunate and could use a little helping hand to get through this next few weeks. A little bit of kindness shown to someone who really needs it could go a very long way.

And if you need inspiration to see what you can do for others during this “lockdown” period, these villagers in Sabah are setting a good example as to what community spirit means.
