Sin Hiap Hin in Melaka
Malaysia is a treasure trove of hotspots to visit, many brimming with rich history within their confined walls. Over in Melaka, you’ll find many quaint shops tucked discreetly along narrow alleyways, each with a unique story to unwrap when you enter through their doors.
One such place is Sin Hiap Hin on Jalan Kampung Jawa.
Not your average watering hole, this 100-year-old bar houses a collection of unique spirits – both the drinks and its owner. And who might that be, you ask? Read on as we pour out the details.
A century-old daytime bar run by a nainai
Nestled on Jalan Kampung Jawa, Sin Hiap Hin is a family-owned bar. From its intriguing moniker, this timbered establishment once served as an opium den, where British colonists and local fishermen and merchants sought solace in spirits and revelry.
At the helm of the bar is 72-year-old Lee Lian Suan, who took the reins following her father-in-law’s demise. Initially a homemaker, she seamlessly transitioned into the role of full-time bar maven after the passing of her husband 3 years ago.
Fast forward to today, you’ll find her working her magic behind her trusty timbered bar, charming patrons with her infectious kindness – much like your nainai would. This septuagenarian runs the show with gusto daily, occasionally receiving help from her 4 sons over the weekends.
In a tête-à-tête with The Smart Local Malaysia, Suan emphasised her commitment to preserving the family legacy. While this bar draws crowds eager for a peek at the lady of the hour, she humbly asserts that fame isn’t her goal. Rather, it’s all about upholding a generations-old tradition that deserves to live on.
A daily grind serving patrons from around the globe
At first glance, Suan defies the norms of ageing, effortlessly gliding around the bar accompanied by the sounds of clinking glasses. Running the show as early as 9.30am, this bartender is already in full swing, orchestrating the daytime revelry that defines this century-old bar.
Step inside and be drawn to a meticulously curated collection of spirits lining shelves behind the time-worn timbered bar. From classic whiskies to exotic gins, and even local specialties like samsus and Chinese herbal blends, the options here are anything but ordinary.
Be prepared to immerse yourself in nostalgia amidst the warmth enveloping this place. With the sounds of the busy streets and passersby just a stone’s throw away, it almost feels like you’re lounging in the comfort of your own home.
And if you find yourself overwhelmed by the selection, fear not – nainai is here to recommend the perfect spirit to suit your palate.
Tradition reigns supreme at this establishment as nainai still relies on her old-school notebook for tallying up the tab. Cash is much appreciated here, but if you happen to spot her son around, you can opt to pay with your Touch ‘n Go e-wallet instead.
Just a heads-up – smoking is prohibited here. And although the sign might suggest otherwise, nainai wouldn’t mind if you snapped a few pictures to capture the memories of this hidden gem.
If you’re feeling peckish, we recommend filling up your tummies before making your way here, as the bar strictly serves only alcoholic drinks and soft drinks.
The mother of four shared with us that her collection includes both local and imported spirits straight from China. With alcohol content as high as 53%, she’s ready to pour you a full peg or dial it back with a half, depending on how well you can handle your drink.
When asked about her favourite, we were surprised to learn that she herself does not drink.
The crowd’s favourite, however, is the Melaka Rice Wine, with a history dating back to 1908. Consisting of 27% alcohol, this rice wine offers the right balance of fermented taste and sweetness.
A drink is served with ice cubes on the side in a metal bowl, and is priced from RM19 for a full peg and RM10 for a half peg.
When we asked for something not too overpowering, nainai suggested Lady Red (RM16/half-peg) – a concoction of Chinese herbs that’s said to promise better sleep and vitality.
Named Nu Er Hong in Chinese, this potion consists of glutinous rice and wheat with 16% alcohol. Accompanied by an added plum, the light and sweet aftermath doesn’t leave you with a quick buzz.
As nainai says, “It’s just right – for a woman”.
Nainai has no plans to retire anytime soon
While the crowd here typically picks up on weekends, nainai still has the stamina to run the show. Weekdays are a different story – it’s quieter, affording her more time to rest than to work.
When asked if she plans to retire from bartending soon, she says that this job keeps her mind occupied. It keeps her from overthinking, especially when she has conversations with her patrons.
Most importantly, she believes it is her duty to uphold her family business.
Nainai tells us, “I must tend to this shop because my father-in-law and husband are no longer here. I have to uphold this family business, or else who will?”. She also shared that after closing the shop in the evening, she relaxes by watching television before heading to bed for a good night’s sleep.
“Okay lah, at this old age, doing a little work and being able to take care of myself is enough already. I don’t think too much, and this is enough for me”, said Nainai.
Sin Hiap Hin is a treasured piece of history in Melaka
Hearing that age is just a number is commonplace, but witnessing it in action – especially with someone like nainai – resonates on a deeper level.
Observing her tallying bills and preparing drinks for patrons with a graceful smile on her face reflects her genuine enjoyment of her work. And if you ask us, it’s the wisdom she imparts during conversations with her patrons that keeps the bar alive beyond its unique concoctions.
So whether you’re here to savour unheard-of spirits or go on a nostalgic journey, receiving firsthand life advice from her will leave you feeling surprisingly intoxicated.
