Man Complains About The Small Portion Of His RM13 BKT That Came Without Rice In Viral Video

Man complains about small portion of BKT order

Food delivery services have become part and parcel of our daily lives, especially during the various stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO) as we try not to dine out as much as possible to curb the spread of COVID-19. But while ordering online usually goes without a hitch for most of us, there are others who are left with unsatisfactory experiences from online orders – such as this man who was dissatisfied with the small portion of bak kut teh that he ordered from a restaurant in Johor.

BKT order leaves patron dissatisfied

Netizen Hu Da Shuai (胡大帅) took to his Facebook page on 28th February 2021 to share his experience after ordering food delivery from Xin Shi Hwa Bak Kut Teh in Eco Botanic through Foodpanda. According to the post, he made an order for the Individual Bak Kut Teh option from the restaurant.

But he was not happy with the scanty portion of his order, and recorded a video voicing his dissatisfaction. In the same post, he also shared a screenshot of the receipt for his order, showing that he paid RM19.07 in total – including RM13 for the food, RM4.99 for the delivery, and RM1.08 for taxes.

In the video, he showed just how “small” the portion was by pouring the contents of a takeaway plastic container for his BKT order into a pan. The amount of BKT broth was just enough to cover the base of the pan – and the amount of meat that came in the order included 5 small pieces of pork belly, 4 short cuts of pork intestines, and 2 small chunks of spare ribs.

We couldn’t discern any “pork tail” bits in the video, that was indicated in the receipt that he shared.

In the video, you can also hear him complaining that the order did not include rice, just packets of chopped garlic and chillies, despite the price he paid for the meal.

We did a quick check on the restaurant’s Foodpanda page, which showed that white rice is considered an “Extra” on their menu and is priced at RM1.50 a la carte. The only clickable option after choosing the Individual Bak Kut Teh – which the man had ordered – is “Choice of Serving”, with options to add 1 or 4 options of spare ribs, pork belly, pork intestine or pork tail.

Netizens have mixed reactions over his viral video

The video Hu Da Shuai shared on Facebook had many netizens commenting with mixed reactions. At the time of writing, the post has garnered over 1,000 shares and 200 reactions.

Many netizens were sympathetic to the restaurant, pointing out that the current MCO has made it hard for businesses to stay afloat – as seen with cinemas and businesses closing as of late due to the pandemic. One netizen commented, “The labour costs behind takeaway food are high, and pork rib and pork are expensive. I suggest that if you want to eat BKT, it’s best to get takeaway in person or dine in.”

Others seemed to understand the man’s frustrations. One netizen even commented that he never orders food deliveries or takeaways, regardless of weather conditions. He added, “High prices, small portions, zero quality, poor service – I won’t pay a cent to have my food delivered.”

Some netizens tried to offer solutions by saying that he could opt to pick up his food on his own if it made him feel better. We are assuming that if he were to pick up the food personally, he would be able to check on the portions and make a complain on the spot. The netizen also suggested that he could cook the meal himself so he can judge for himself whether or not the cost of ingredients justified the “high” price he had to pay.

Small portion of BKT order leaves man disgruntled

Many businesses are struggling to stay afloat this time, as the pandemic has put a pause on our usual social activity outdoors for over a year now, so it’s understandable that some are struggling more than others. But when individuals who have less-than-satisfactory experiences with their food delivery orders share their stories, it always generates discussion as netizens take sides in a robust discussion.

We hope that Hu Da Shuai will have more pleasant experiences with his food delivery orders in future. That being said, we should be supporting local businesses as much as we can now that the MCO is lifted.
