Subang Airport resumes jet operations in August
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) opened back in 1998. Since then, airlines have rerouted flights to land from the smaller Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB), or Subang Airport, to the Sepang terminal – the largest and busiest airport in Malaysia.Â
But this will soon change. After 26 years, Subang Airport will resume jet operations, welcoming back single-aisle aircrafts, in August 2024. Airlines such as AirAsia, Scoot, and Batik Air Malaysia are set to relaunch selected flights from the terminal, which is situated just 20 minutes from the city centre of KL.
More flights out of Subang Airport
Currently, only Firefly operates commercial flights on ATR turboprops out of Subang Airport – these are typically smaller airplanes that can carry just under 100 passengers.
But Subang Airport is set to resume jet operations in August, as reported by The Edge Malaysia.

With the resumption of jet operations from the terminal, up to five airlines will begin operating narrow-body aircrafts there. Three Malaysian-based carriers – Firefly, Batik Air Malaysia, and AirAsia – will relaunch flights from Subang Airport.
Batik Air Malaysia plans to fly its B737 MAX-8 aircraft to domestic destinations, while Firefly will operate its B737-800 aircraft. Likewise, AirAsia will launch two daily flights to Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) and Kuching International Airport (KCH) starting 30th August, with tickets available from 23rd July.
It is reported that up to 15 slots for take-off will be allocated for the airlines at Subang Airport, however, the frequency of these take-offs and movement schedule are still being considered.

Two foreign airlines will also join the operations.
On 12th July, it was confirmed that Indonesia’s TransNusa will be flying out of Subang Airport in August, as reported by New Straits Times.
Singapore’s budget airline Scoot has also announced that they will launch daily flights from Subang Airport to Singapore from 1st September onwards, with 10 weekly flights on the airline’s Airbus A320. One-way fares start from RM108.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is currently conducting Operational Readiness Activation and Transition (ORAT) tests in preparation for the jet operations to ensure readiness and mitigate potential risks.
Once ready, the terminal is expected to welcome up to 3 million passengers annually, a jump from the current 1.5 million.
Five airlines to relaunch jet operations from Subang Airport
As Subang Airport resumes jet operations, we can look forward to flying domestically and regionally from an airport just a short drive from KL’s city centre.
