Yunalis binti Mat Zara’ai, more popularly known by her stage name Yuna, was born in Alor Setar, Kedah, the picturesque rice bowl of Malaysia. Her father, Dato’ Mat Zara’ai, holds the esteemed position of legal advisor in Pahang while her mother is a dedicated high school teacher. Thanks to their unwavering support and love for music, Yuna developed a passion for singing and songwriting from a very young age.

In an interview with US magazine, Tidal, she recalled how her dad loved playing the guitar and her mum the piano when she was a young girl. Her love for music only grew as she moved between states in her youth, getting exposed to various genres like 90s Malay pop rock and rock kapak when her family called the town of Perlis their home, and R&B and local hip-hop while living in Kuala Lumpur. She began picking up the pen and writing her own music at 14 years old.

2. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in legal studies

With how good she is at singing and songwriting, it might be surprising to some to find out that Yuna once pursued a career as a lawyer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in legal studies from local university Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). But her pursuit to become a notable lawyer like her dad took an unexpected turn.

When her music career began to gain traction locally, Yuna found herself at a crossroads, torn between her passion for music and following her father’s path. She made the life-changing decision to pursue her musical dreams – a choice that proved to be worth the risk after all.

In a chat with Interview Magazine, the homegrown songstress shared that her initial goal was to leave Malaysia since no one had ever done that before. But her dream was not met without naysayers, as she had people telling her that she was “crazy”. She didn’t give up as her life motto is “don’t believe what they’re saying”. And it paid off in the end.
