What is FabCafe?
FabCafe is part of a global creative network that merges cafe culture with digital making, with locations in Japan, Mexico, and Hong Kong. Founded by Ignatius Andi Permadi and Gwyneth Jong in 2012, this spot in Bandar Sunway provides creative individuals with access to professional equipment typically reserved for design studios or production spaces, including laser cutters, 3D printers, and digital embroidery machines.

In this 2-hour workshop, you can paint and customise laser-engraved mahjong tiles. You’ll also learn traditional tile drilling techniques and get to assemble your own personalised set to take home.

Get to choose one classic illustration, such as a Lucky or Bamboo 1, to paint, or if you’re coming on a special occasion, designs like Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday. You’ll also get to pick from a Malaysian design, including the Petronas Twin Towers, a durian, and tropical fruits.
The patterns have been prepared by Hong Kong-based mahjong brand, Karen Aruba Art, so you’ll get to experience a slice of the mahjong-making craft here in Malaysia.

At the end of the session, a gift box set with seven mahjong tiles will be yours to bring home. It’ll pack four tiles with digits of your choice, two special patterns, and a bonus Green Dragon tile.
The session includes materials and a complimentary drink, with a price of RM165 per person.
Workshop schedules rotate regularly, but FabCafe has been consistently holding the mahjong workshop each month. You can register on their website for updated dates and new themes.
Upcoming dates for their workshop sessions, all held from 2pm to 4pm, are 14th March, 18th April, 9th May, 20th June, and 18th July.
