Schoolboy live reports python sighting in Kedah

Children are often a source of joy for adults with their unpredictable behaviour. At times, they amaze us with their intelligence – other times, they’re just great at making us laugh with their funny antics and unfiltered remarks.

This 11-year-old boy from Kedah managed to be both intelligent and amusing at the same time, as his live reporting of a python sighting in a drain went viral on social media. The video showed him overcoming his fear of the reptile to take on the role of a ‘news reporter’ to inform fellow residents of the incident.

The story of Muhammad Hafiq Mohd Asyraf from Bukit Selambau, Kedah, caught the attention of Malaysians online when he appeared in a 2-minute, 47-second long video, live reporting the sighting of a large python in the drain of a local market.

The 11 year old can be seen talking rather anxiously about the discovery of a reptile that market vendors had spotted inside a drain. The snake was initially mistaken to be rubbish that was clogging a drain and disrupting water flow.

The video begins with Hafiq introducing himself to the residents of Bukit Selambau. He then ‘broke the news’ of the snake discovery at the market, while visibly out of breath.

Nonetheless, he doesn’t forget to let viewers know important information surrounding the sighting, including the fact that residents had alerted the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) for assistance.

A report by Utusan Malaysia later confirmed that the 4-metre long snake, weighing about 30kg, was successfully caught by APM officers before being released to its original habitat.

Throughout the viral video, Hafiq, who is a student from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Selambau, can be seen and heard presenting the snake discovery much like a real reporter would on a live news programme. He live-streamed the incident, and explained the situation to a tee to his audience.

He even uttered sentences such as “This is the latest news” and “Let us take a look at this huge python” in the video – mimicking an actual breaking news report.

Netizen amused by Hafiq’s eloquence and reactions

A reposted version of the viral video has amassed over 1 million views and over 20,000 shares on Facebook, at the time of writing. Netizens were amused by Hafiq’s eloquence during his live reporting, and his reactions towards the python sighting.

Many of them complimented the 11 year old’s courage – putting aside his fears to report the incident to his viewers. Some also left laughing emojis in the comment section, presumably amused at how the boy managed to cover the sighting even in an understandable state of panic.
