Shaved ice desserts in KL & Selangor

Staying outdoors on a typical afternoon in Malaysia means sweating buckets and damp patches on the back of our shirts. While we can never outshine the sun, these are the 8 best shaved ice desserts in KL where you can take a “chill pill”.

1. Wild Rooster

The cosy camper-style interior of Wild Rooster in Bukit Jalil will entice you for a chill hangout with friends. But their shaved ice with unique flavours will make you stay.

Their Salt Bae (RM25) is an interplay of milk-based shaved ice, salted egg sauce, and furikake. Topping it all off is a jiggly slab of tau fu fah, which contrasts beautifully against the smooth shaved ice. With its appearance, this dessert can be easily mistaken for a Japanese rice dish.

Another best-seller on the menu is Be Happy (RM26), which features pistachio sauce and coconut ice cream. On the side are red beans to double the nuttiness – and certainly the happiness.

Address: 2-12, Persiaran Jalil Utama, Bukit Jalil, 57000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: Fri-Sun 12pm-12am | Tue-Thu 12pm-11am (Closed on Mondays)

Taiwanese House in Kepong is the place to go for Taiwanese-style shaved ice (from RM15.90).

The mochi crowning their Mochi Shaved Ice is freshly made and tossed in ground peanut and black sesame. The unique sensation of biting into the warm and chewy mochi amidst the cold and snowy ice is satisfying enough to make you gasp.

Their Pure Yam Red Bean Ice (RM17.90) deserves as much attention. The yam paste on top is so thick and smooth it could pass for ice cream.

Combined with the chewy sweet potato balls and subtly firm red beans, this dessert also has several different textures dancing on your tastebuds.

Address: 17, Floor G Jalan 2/33B Off Jalan Kepong BT6 1/2 Section, Mwe Kepong Commercial Park, 52100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

3. Tong Yik Dessert

Late-night shaved snow

As much as you think having a late-night mamak date is romantic, it’s better to steer clear of such a risky move. Bring your date to Tong Yik Dessert instead, which remains open until 1am. Their shaved snow (RM18.90) is so hefty that you can conveniently share it with your date.

Take, for example, their Strawberry Mango Shaved Snow – a heap of mango-flavoured shaved snow adorned with fresh strawberries and mangoes. The blob of sweet milk cream on top further underpins the tanginess of the fruits.

Besides the fruit-centric flavours, there is a menu section for their milk tea series (from RM11.90). The milk tea-based shaved snow comes with toppings such as red beans, glutinous balls, ice cream, and grass jellies.

Address: LG-05, Residensi Majestic Maxim, 45, Jalan 9, Taman Bukit Cheras, 56000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

4. Sulbing

Korean bingsu with injeolmi & tiramisu

It is hard to pass by Sulbing, a famous dessert chain from Korea, without turning your head to give their bingsu a second look. That being said, the desserts taste as good as they look.

We recommend starting with their Red-Bean Injeolmi Sulbing (RM38), which highlights the classic duo of red beans and subtly sweet Injeolmi – a traditional Korean rice cake coated with soyabean powder.

Their Tiramisu Bingsu (RM55) is also a winner. The piece of tiramisu hugging the top is so weighty that it “distorts” the vanilla ice cream underneath.

Meanwhile, their Strawberry Yoghurt Sulbing (from RM38) tastes of summer. It is covered in fresh strawberry slices and proffered with yoghurt for extra tanginess.

Sik Thong Ba has a good reputation for traditional tong sui and tau fu fah, but their shaved ice is just as spot-on.

Their Rice Ball Soya Ice (RM14.90) is a delicious dessert inspired by the famous Taiwanese street food “Fire and Ice Tang Yuan”. It has hot tang yuan so generously filled with black sesame that they practically make a dent in the fluffy soymilk-based shaved ice.

Their Coconut Taroball Black Sesame Ice (RM15.90) and Matcha Supreme (RM14.90) topped with ice cream will also have you scrape the bowls clean.

The loaded amount of popping pearls, taro balls, and red beans give way to the airy shaved snow, which is infused with the flavours of black sesame and matcha respectively.

The Taro Shaved Ice (RM11) has been a customer favourite for a long time. You won’t be able to catch even a glimpse of the ice as it is completely hidden under the luscious taro sauce.

Their fruit-based shaved ice (from RM10) is a simple ensemble of fruits, ice, and sago, but nothing ho-hum. You can pick from honeydew, mango, and kiwi.

Their Cendol Ice (RM11.90) is an upgraded version of traditional cendol, with additional sweet potato balls, tapioca pearls, and ice cream. Another crowd favourite is the Oat-thentic Shaved Ice (RM13.90), which carries the sweet and toasty aroma of oats.

Dessert lovers must be familiar with Aftermeal. Opening until midnight, this OG dessert shop has over four outlets in KL and PJ.

Their signature Iron Lady Milk Tea Kakigori (RM25) is the equivalence of milk tea in a frozen form. Instead of tapioca pearls, you will find grass jellies under the shaved snow.

But don’t worry if you still want that QQ experience because tapioca pearls and sweet potato balls are served separately on the side.

Their Matcha Latte Kakigori (RM28) is the star of its own show, nailing the matcha vibe. The kakigori is treated to a snowfall of matcha powder, transforming the snowy landscape into a green mountain reminiscent of spring.

Nestled at the core is matcha ice cream. But before you dive in, dress the dessert with the accompanying jar of rich matcha sauce.
