Bangsar cafes and restaurants

You’ve likely faced this scenario before – it’s the weekend and you just can’t wait to catch up with your friends over a meal. But then comes the challenge of finding the perfect spot to savour good food in a comfortable setting. When faced with this dilemma, head to one of these 9 cafes and restaurants in Bangsar, KL, that we rounded up below.

They serve everything from artisanal cakes and pastries to Muslim-friendly dim sum and Japanese handrolls – perfect for your next brunch.

1. Plump – flourless cloud cake with rich dark chocolate

A visit to Plump is certainly a cake lover’s dream come true.

Located on the first floor of a shoplot, this cafe has an extensive selection of artisanal cakes – we’re referring to an assortment of over 20 options. They also have an exclusive cake menu that changes every day.

Their dark-chocolate flourless cake, the Messy Cake aka Cloud Cake (RM24), is a must-try. A mousey base is topped with thick vanilla cream cheese frosting that resembles a fluffy cloud. It’s hard to imagine what a real cloud tastes like, but this “cloud” adds a sweet and salty touch to the deep cocoa flavour of the cake.

Those who relish a nutty-fruity combo can opt to dive into their Fig Pistachio Cake (RM24). This cake sings on the plate with its pop of green and pink from chopped pistachios, fresh figs, and raspberries.

The Kaya Cake (RM22) is another crowd-pleaser – it’s the equivalent of kaya toast but in a soft cake form. It encompasses layerings of salted butter and almond cake, homemade kaya, and vanilla frosting, sprinkled with crunchy bread crumbs.

Reminiscent of an old-school butter cake, their Ugly Cake (RM18) doesn’t look fancy but its flavours will evoke a sense of nostalgia with each bite. Yet, a rich buttery taste isn’t all the cake has to offer, as the addition of salted chocolate and pecans give it a deep and nutty twist.

For crispy fried chicken, KFC might still be the winner. But when it comes to grilled chicken, make your way to Ben’s Chicken Shop

The restaurant grills chicken over charcoal flames to acquire a nice smoky aroma. You can order their signature chicken in a Quarter (RM15), Half (RM25), or Whole (RM45)

Get ready with some tissues to wipe away your sweat and tears, as the chicken will be generously doused in your selected hot sauce. There are three flavours: Piri Piri, Percik, and Persian.

To make it a complete meal, add some sides (RM5) such as pilaf rice, salad, yuzu coleslaw, and cream mash with gravy.

Besides grilled chicken, they also serve Chicken Wrap (RM18), Chicken Percik Sandwich (RM18), and light bites such as Chicken Nuggets (RM10 for six pieces)

Whether you’re on your own or with friends, you can trust Last Project for a palatable dinner in a laidback setting. Their one-page menu covers everything you need to know about the restaurant’s cookery – pork-free Japanese handrolls, yakitoris, and fusion dishes.

The handrolls, such as New California (RM18) and Sashimi Rolls (RM28), aren’t exactly rolled up. They are served unrolled – open-faced on a concave plate, giving you a clear view of all the ingredients that go onto each crispy nori

The yakitoris are available in a wide range of proteins – seafood, wagyu beef, and duck included. But among the plethora of choices, you should try the Special Tsukene (RM16)

It isn’t a science project, but there are steps to fully savour the dish. First, stir the raw egg yolk thoroughly with the teriyaki sauce in the bowl, then dip the chicken meatball skewer into it.

This gives each bite of meat a medley of sweet and creamy flavours that intertwine with a smoky savouriness from the barbecued meatball.

Crab Cheong Fun (RM32) is good for sharing when you are visiting with a group.

This novel chee cheong fun has soft-shell crabs and mangoes wrapped in silky-thin rice noodles, showered with some sesame seeds and fish roes. It resembles a popish. Dip it into the mango mayo sauce on the side to add a bit more tanginess to your bite.

There is no shortage of brunch spots in KL. But Breakfast Thieves tops the list of places to head to for many KL folks. Founded in 2012 in Melbourne, this cafe has branched out to Malaysia and is now nestled in APW Bangsar, a repurposed 63-year-old printing factory.

Their ample and delicious meals have customers coming back for more – you might not even mind having a food coma after a meal here.

In keeping with the “thieves” theme, they name some of their food items after popular crime films – take Bonnie & Clyde (RM37) for example. This dish stars a French-style pan-fried potato cake with seared salmon and avocado butter.

Another must-try dish is Gotti’s Black Gold (RM30), a meatless creation of toasted brioche with truffle cream and poached eggs.

Likewise, their Bastardized Rice (RM40) is nothing like its name. This dish elevates the regular roasted meat with rice, featuring wagyu beef char siew coated in glistening barbecue sauce. The chicken leg is poached rather than steamed, resulting in a texture that’s juicier and more tender.

Jibby Chow takes on a contemporary approach with Chinese fare. Their menu spans an extensive range of Chinese-style meat and seafood dishes, as well as vegetables and soups.

For meat lovers, feast on the Mongolian-style Australian Lamb Ribs (RM56), which have customers’ seal of approval. The ribs are stacked up like Jenga blocks, the pile delightfully enrobed in a sweet and smoky sauce.

Their Linguine Goreng (RM32) is also worth a try. This pasta version of mee goreng has prawns, chicken breast, tau pok, and kailan stir-fried with linguine noodles.

Additionally, if you visit the restaurant any day between 10am to 5pm, you get to enjoy their Muslim-friendly dim sum. We recommend the Black Gold Har Gow With Truffle (RM23). The mouthfeel sensation of juicy truffle-infused shrimp bursting through the chewy translucent wrapper is sublime.

Their Yin Yang Custard Bun (RM15) is as drool-worthy. Pull the steamy charcoal buns apart and the molten salted egg custard will come oozing right out.

Beyond the variety of delectable flavours, this appetiser is a total looker, as each element is neatly arranged around the plate to create a beautiful colour palette.

If you’re coming for breakfast, the Chickpea Fatteh (RM22) is a wholesome choice. The dish comprises yoghurt, chickpeas, nuts, and pomegranate seeds – all go atop a stack of crispy flatbread.

You know the cafe takes baking seriously when there’s a dedicated corner for their sweet and savoury baked goods.

On the display counter are scrumptious pastries such as Eclairs (from RM15), Danish (from RM8), French Quiches (from RM15), and Italian cream bun Maritozzi (from RM12).

For cakes (from RM17/slice & RM150/whole), some of the best-sellers to look out for are Pandan Gula Melaka Cake, Pistachio Rose Cake, and Peach Cheesecake.

The food menu comprises Western and Asian cuisines.

They swap out the regular white rice for organic black rice to prepare their signature Black Rice Nasi Lemak (RM30). This redefined classic, containing fewer calories and carbs but is rich in antioxidants, also comes with prawn sambal and a bowl of steaming-hot chicken curry.

Another gem is the Baked Eggs Shakshuka (RM28), a popular Middle Eastern dish served in a skillet.

The crispy tortilla in this dish acts as the base for the flavourful stew of tomatoes, black-eyed beans, and feta cheese. Atop everything are two baked eggs with runny yolks – the ideal sauce for the accompanying toast.
