The Baking Xperiment in Subang Jaya
Subang Jaya is a prime place to visit whenever you’re food hunting. Whether you want to catch up with an old friend or have some me-time on a lazy Sunday, The Baking Xperiment, or TBX, should be the first place that comes to mind. The cafe goes beyond just serving croissants and pain au chocolat.
They also serve cookies, brownies, and cakes. But their cronigiris and cracking lattes had our full attention.
A cosy neighbourhood cafe in Subang Jaya
Unlike the usual bustling cafes on busy streets in Subang Jaya, The Baking Xperiment is the kind of place you go to escape your busy schedule and just chill – it’s located on a quiet street, next to rows of houses, in SS17. Picture yourself on a Thursday afternoon, sipping on a cup of warm coffee, munching on pastries, and watching people dropping by for a quick bite after running errands or for tea-time.
Most patrons are here for their freshly baked pastries. Once you enter the cafe, you’ll be greeted by an array of mouth-watering pastries and cakes behind a glass display case – bread, croissants, cookies, and all. But what piqued our interest was their viral crack drinks and cronigiris.
Viral cracking lattes and cronigiris
TBX’s crack drink (RM18) comes in three flavours – chocolate, latte, and matcha.
What you can expect with each drink is a layer of hardened chocolate lining the interior of the cup and filled with your choice of drink. You’ll hear a subtle cracking sound as you press the cup. As the chocolate shell begins to crack, you can fully appreciate the milky swirls in the drink.
When opening up the lid, you’ll be surprised to see a generous amount of cracked chocolate pieces in the cup. You’ll be given a spoon to scoop them up and eat them piece by piece, so nothing goes to waste.
Each drink is paired with different chocolate type, that helps to make the drinks even more milky and creamy. The matcha drink is paired with white chocolate, while the latte with milk chocolate and the chocolate with dark chocolate.
If you’ve tried flat croissants and cronuts, you’ll definitely have to try this new hybrid mash-up – cronigiris. The cronigiri melds the flavours of savoury Japanese onigiri and France’s flaky croissant. Priced at RM12, it comes in three flavours – Truffled Egg Mayo, Spicy Tuna, and Salmon Mentaiko.
Whether you want to bite into the pastry or break it apart, the flavourful fillings of each cronigiri is filled to the brim – rest assured, you won’t just have a mouthful of croissant.
The flaky-ness of the cronigiri will make you want to bring some home for your family to try – it is so good that you need to share it. Since they only serve a handful of these delectable pastries a day, consider coming to the cafe earlier in the day to get your hands on them.
