KLCG’s New Cup-Like Croissants Have Oozing Matcha, Chocolate & Yoghurt Cheese Inside Flaky Buttery Crusts

KLCG Confectionery & Bakery in KL

It was 2021 when KLCG Confectionery & Bakery took its root in Dataran Merdeka in KL, hitting the pastry scene in the most delicious way. Whether it is the classic blueberry Danish or the decadent pain au chocolat, nothing in this family-run bakery is ho-hum. Each baked good is specially handcrafted and served fresh out of the oven.

But what’s more exciting is their new Yoghurt Cheese Flower Cup Cruffins, which marry the flaky crust of a croissant with the cup-like shape of a muffin.

Given the rave reviews people have for this bakery, we didn’t hesitate to pay it a visit to sample the new cruffins and bring you this review.

KLCG Confectionery & Bakery has a particular love for croissants. Their menu reads a plethora of cream croissants, seasonal cronuts, fruit-based cruffins, and rectangle-sized pain suisse croissants.

Their The Suprême (RM14.90) circular croissant even made a name for itself last year, drawing curious crowds to come and have a try.

Now, the French pastry series welcomes a new member – Yoghurt Cheese Flower Cup Cruffin.

Each cruffin dough is baked in a muffin mould, which gives the exterior a cup-like shape. The flaky mounds are filled with yoghurt cheese that comes in three flavours: Original (RM12.90), Niko Neko Matcha (RM14.90), and Chocolate (RM14.90)

Here’s our verdict

The crust of the cruffin made a crackling sound as we ran our knife across it – an indicator of how crispy it was.

When we sliced the pastry in half, the yoghurt cheese came oozing out like an ecstatic kid rushing for candies.

Each bite delivered a symphony of flakiness and creaminess.

The Original Yoghurt Cheese Flower Cup was rich and delicious. Its filling resembled a sweeter version of Greek yoghurt, going well with the buttery shell.

Meanwhile, savouring the Matcha Flower Cup was akin to having a slice of matcha cheesecake. The flavour was matcha-forward but the tangy-creamy yoghurt cheese brought everything back to an even.

The Chocolate Flower Cup, on the other hand, boasted a mellow cocoa note of dark chocolate.

The texture of the filling was also thicker and creamier, elegantly staying inside the shell. There was no need to glide the crust over the plate to wipe up every bit of the delicious sauce as we did with the previous two.

Finger-licking good yoghurt cheese cruffins at KLCG

Upon licking the last smear of yoghurt cheese off our fingers, we thought these flower cup cruffins were the epitome of finger-licking goodness. The fine quality and yummy taste of the uniquely shaped croissants had us willingly stretching our stomach a bit further to finish all three sizable pieces.

This bakery, once again, proves that it never disappoints.

While KLCG has been sweetening Dataran Merdeka with its toothsome baked goods for the past few years, 2023 will mark its last year at this historical site.

As one chapter closes, another begins. The bakery will embark on a new journey at a new location and with a new name – KLCG 2.0. While they haven’t announced where they will be heading next, you can still get their baked goods online.
