Klang is best known for bak kut teh, but the city has some non-BKT hidden gems like Bukku Cafe, a quaint European-style book cafe. It has a bookshelf filled with English and Chinese novels, Lonely Planet guides, and children’s books.

Bukku Cafe mainly serves pastries and desserts, with the perfectly melty Salted Egg Yolk and Green Tea Croissants (both RM7.50) being the stars on the menu. It has a great selection of MSG-free Western dishes too, like the Gourmet Burger Patty (RM15) which comes with beef, chicken and vegetarian options.

2. Kamilah’s Lifestyle & Book Cafe – a homey, local hideout

Kamilah’s Lifestyle and Book Cafe is a country-living themed cafe with bright blue walls that gives a warm, inviting feeling. The shelves that line one side of the store are filled with Chinaware and knick knacks that add to the cafe’s relaxed vibe.

The cafe serves healthy Malaysian and Western dishes without preservatives. Its Nasi Lemak With Egg (RM5.50) is cooked with low-fat santan, and the Meaty Burger With Fries (RM15.90) is said to have 5% less fat content than regular burgers.

3. Ink Library Cafe – container cafe in Sungai Buloh

Ink Library Cafe is a container cafe hidden in Grandeur Labs in Eco Grandeur, a new development in Puncak Alam. It carries mainly indie English magazines from the US and UK, but it also has a good assortment of fiction and coffee-table books in English, Chinese, and Malay scattered around the aesthetically-pleasing bookshelves.

The cafe has ample seating space indoors with conveniently located wall plugs for those who want to get work done. Or if you’re looking for some fresh air, there are sofas outside too.

The menu has Western dishes that mainly comprise pastas, pizza, and burgers. You can go for an Aglio Olio Seafood Pasta (RM18.90) and Salted Egg Pasta with Smoked Duck Breast (RM25.90), or if you’re not too hungry, snack on light bites like Homey Popcorn Chicken (RM9.80).

4. First Step Coffee – Korean book cafe in Solaris Mont Kiara

First Step Coffee is the perfect book cafe for those who want privacy and a Korean snack to go with your book. This spacious book cafe has Korean, English, and Chinese titles on its bookshelves.

It also serves traditional Kimbab (RM10). Their menu comprises Western dishes like Ham & Cheese Toast (RM18) and Carbonara Spaghetti (RM23), and you can also request a plate of traditional Kimbab (RM10) from the staff.

5. Little Moments Cafe – rustic library with kampung vibes

Occupying a kampung-style house, Little Giraffe Story House is an airy community library tucked away in New Village Settlement in Cheras. It is filled with Chinese children’s books to borrow and buy. But with the rustic Little Moments Cafe located inside the library, you can find both old and young folks here.

The cafe has an all-day breakfast menu that includes Big Breakfast Set (RM14) and Waffles with Ice Cream (RM4.50). But people regularly flock here for the Rojak (RM6) and Taufu Bakar (RM4) from the Rojak Wan stall that used to be in Taman Tun. Pair these with a cool dessert of Cendol (RM4.50) or a cup of rich iced Vietnamese Coffee (RM6).

Parking is limited here because it is in a neighborhood, but you can park at the Chinese primary school just a 2 minute walk away. If you do have trouble finding this place, the Little Giraffe Story House has an over 20ft orange, metal giraffe on its porch.

6. Me Time Book Cafe – cozy pods at manga cafe in PJ

Me Time Book Cafe offers a cozy capsule experience for those who want to unwind and have some quiet time. It is meant to emulate famous manga cafes in Japan with its nap pods, and amenities such as paid showers, printers, and Wifi.

This book cafe in PJ has 4 pods for you to use, an open-spaced upper deck, and Tatami mats and bean bags to laze on. It also has shelves filled with manga comic books, and books in Chinese and English, that you can read while you’re here. The owner of the store welcomes any donated books too.
And if you need a little pick-me-up, the store has Coffee or Tea (RM2/each) and a Shower Room (RM10). Entry fee costs RM25/2 hours, but first-timers can get a 2-hour trial for RM5/person with a free cup of coffee or tea. Sign up as a member and you’ll only need to pay RM18/2 hours, with a complimentary drink included.

Its shelves are filled with a variety of books for sale – usually at low prices – with genres ranging from DIY and fiction, to children’s books. It is the perfect place to order desserts and dive straight into your latest literary purchase after browsing through books.
