As Malaysia heads into Phase 4 of the Movement Control Order (MCO), it’s heartening to see the daily number of new COVID-19 cases reported moving on a downward trend. Now that the country has successfully flattened the curve, Malaysians are just anxious to see if the number of active cases will dwindle down to zero anytime soon.
The Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has said in a recent press conference that he expects the number of new COVID-19 cases to drop to single digits by mid-May, which would coincide with the MCO’s expected end date on 12th May 2020.

As reported by Bernama, Dr Noor Hisham shared that the projection regarding the number of new COVID-19 cases was made after studying the current trend, where the number of cases has dropped from triple to double digits in recent weeks.

However, Malaysians must take note that it is still important for us to continue observing the MCO for the remaining duration as it’s a crucial factor in containing the outbreak. If we continue to blatantly violate the MCO by leaving our houses unnecessarily, our errant ways could contribute to a resurgence of new COVID-19 cases.
Over 21,000 arrested for violating MCO
A day after the press conference, it was reported that over 21,000 people have been arrested for violating the MCO. According to The Star, local authorities have nabbed a total of 21,106 individuals since the beginning of MCO back in 18th March 2020. In just the past 2 days, over 1,000 arrests were made – 489 on Monday and 606 on Sunday.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob says that the MCO will not end until the government is confident that the COVID-19 outbreak is totally contained as they do not want to lift the MCO only to see a spike in cases in the following weeks.
If everyone continues to observe the MCO, we can expect to see a drop in the number of active COVID-19 cases. This will help facilitate the government’s decision to lift the MCO.

Thanks to vigilant Malaysians who’ve been staying put at home and the authorities’ diligent efforts, we’re one more step closer to eliminating COVID-19. Before we get to see those dwindling COVID-19 numbers, we have to do our part by staying at home and maintaining good hygiene at all times.
