Ismail Sabri appointed Prime Minister of Malaysia


The country has gone through several days of uncertainty over who will be the new Prime Minister of Malaysia, following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation. In a long-awaited update on 20th August 2021, Istana Negara officially announced that Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be appointed the ninth Prime Minister of Malaysia.

He will be sworn in on Saturday, 21st August, at 2.30PM.

On 20th August, Istana Negara released a press statement on the appointment of Ismail Sabri as Malaysia’s ninth Prime Minister on their official Facebook page.

According to the statement from the Controller of Royal Household Datuk Indera Ahmad Fadhil Shamsuddin, on behalf of Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Ismail Sabri secured majority support among 114 members of the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives). This is a basis for the appointment of him as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia, in line with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

He will therefore be sworn into the role on 21st August, at 2.30PM at Istana Negara.

The new Prime Minister of Malaysia will hopefully bring an end to the current political crisis, working together with members of the House of Representatives to look after the people and continue the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malaysia has seen several days of political uncertainty, following the eighth Prime Minister’s resignation that left the country without a leader firmly in place. Now, our country will have a new Prime Minister, who is tasked to safeguard the nation’s economy and welfare, and lead the country out of the pandemic.
