Come the weekends, and we’re scrolling more than usual through our phones looking for new things to do and see. Shopping malls may be our go-to lepak spots – but with festivities and activities like Deepavali and Halloween just around the corner, we can expect our weekends to be a little more fun-filled this October.

Here, we rounded up 8 things to do in Klang Valley this month – from exploring a new dining hub with a scenic garden, to listening to classical music with a spooky Halloween twist. 


1. Explore Bamboo Hills, a new dining hub in KL

With the plethora of eateries that seem to crop up every other day in KL, some of us would consider hunting out new places to eat in the city a sport. In Segambut, there’s a new dining enclave called Bamboo Hills to add to your list of food places to check out this month.

Located just a 14-minute drive from KLCC, and 16 minutes from KL Sentral, Bamboo Hills just recently opened their doors to the public. New outlets from well-known eateries are now also welcoming patrons here, including Botanica+Co and Starbucks. 

Other eateries set to open here soon, such as Nok Yung Fine Thai Cuisine and Kampai Yakiniku, will bring in additional international cuisines for more brunch and dinner options.

Besides grabbing a hearty brunch and sipping on lattes here, you can wander through Bamboo Hill’s serene green landscape for photos. The garden that surrounds the eateries comprises a pond with a brown Monet-like bridge surrounded by lush greenery, which all bring to mind Japanese gardens.

2. Immerse yourself in art at the Malaysia & Korea Art Exhibition

If spending an afternoon in a quiet gallery filled with paintings appeals more to you than a buzzing weekend at a crowded mall, drop by the Celebration of Harmony through Arts: Malaysia & Korea Art Exhibition.

This free exhibition in KL features 57 artworks from 41 Malaysian and South Korean artists. On display are watercolour paintings, photographs, ceramics, and even a buk, or traditional Korean drum. These artworks have all been carefully selected to showcase talents from the two countries and highlight their cultural ties.

There’s also a booth here where you can try your hand at folding a ddakji to bring home. This folded-paper tile is used in a traditional Korean game, recently made popular overseas by Netflix’s Squid Game – Gong Yoo’s mysterious character in the show might ring a bell.

3. Explore Nextgen, the new indoor theme park at 1 Utama E

There are plenty of family-friendly attractions in Klang Valley to visit with the kiddos, including a new spot at 1 Utama Shopping Centre – Nextgen Theme Park. This recently-opened entertainment and education indoor theme park covers over 45,000 square feet, and features several fun-filled zones for the whole fam to enjoy.

These include an Engagement Zone with trampolines next to a velcro wall and even a rock climbing wall. At the Entertainment Zone, you can take things a little slower by playing 30 different arcade games or singing your heart out in a karaoke room.

For the month of October, Nextgen is having an opening promotion with RM10 off tickets for adults and kids. There’s also a Family Pass, comprising tickets for two adults and one child, that is priced at RM99 on weekdays and RM128 on weekends.

Admission: RM48/adult and RM38/kid on weekdays, and RM58/pax and RM48/kid on weekends. Do note that fees for adults apply to those aged between 13 and 59 years old, and 3-12 year olds for kids.

4. Rock out to Boys Like Girls & local acts at RockOn Festival 2022

There have been a whole slew of musicians announcing concerts in our country ever since Covid-19 restrictions eased. This month, US rock band Boys Like Girls is set to headline this year’s RockOn Festival for one night only in Subang Jaya.

If you spent your teenage years belting out hits from the band like The Great Escape and Love Drunk, you’ll want to catch them live to sing and dance it out to their best and newest hits.

Other acts also set to perform at the music festival include Pop Shuvit, Sekumpulan Orang Gila, and Kyoto Protocol.

5. Listen to “spooky” classical music at MPO’s Halloween Spooktacular

October is bringing plenty of spooky vibes to local attractions – as well as live performances. On 29th October, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is putting on a one-night Halloween Spooktacular show led by conductor, Naohisa Furusawa.

Be entertained by spine-chilling performances of popular spooky tracks from musicals and more, including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and The X Files. You’ll get to see the performers dressed up in Halloween costumes, for extra sinister vibes.

6. Step into a comic book world at The Garden Mall’s 2D photo stations

Those looking to update their Instagram feeds with cool pics can drop by The Garden Mall’s 2D photo stations. From now till 16th October 2022, the monochrome displays at the mall lets you snap trippy photos in a “comic book” world.

Reminiscent of backdrops from the well-known 2D Greem Cafe in South Korea, you’ll get to pose sitting at a vanity table, or at a “kitchen” and “cafe”, all with quirky line-illustrated props and backdrops.

7. Get into the festive mood with Kedai’s Deepavali bazaar

The month of October signals the start of Deepavali festivities. Besides munching on delectable traditional snacks, many have begun shopping to get into the festive mood. Over at KEDAI, there’s a themed bazaar called “Light Up Bazaar At Kedai KL” to help usher in the joyous season.

There will be over 30 local vendors at the bazaar. Shop for stationery and jewellery from Thevith.my Studios or fresh flower bouquets from Buttercup by WR, just to name a few.

8. Catch a world famous French opera at Klpac

The KL City Opera will be bringing one of the most iconic operas in the world, Carmen, to klpac. Based on the 1845 novella of the same name, the opera follows a Spanish gypsy and her ill-fated love with a soldier in Seville, Spain, in a roughly 3-hour long show.

This month, Malaysians can catch a live performance of the opera, first performed in Paris in 1875, with its well-known tunes including Habanera.
