Penang State Museum & Art Gallery in Lebuh Farquhar
After almost a decade behind closed doors, the Penang State Museum & Art Gallery has finally reopened with interactive exhibits and revamped galleries with immersive technology that take visitors through Penang’s fascinating past.
Housed in a grand historic building along Lebuh Farquhar, the newly restored museum is open to the public for free to visit, till 31st August 2026.
What is the history of Penang State Museum & Art Gallery?
The pristine white colonial structure of the Penang State Museum & Art Gallery is unmistakable along Lebuh Farquhar, gathering flocks of visitors in recent weeks since its grand opening in June 2026, following an extensive restoration and upgrade.

While the museum itself was first established in 1964, the story of the building dates back to when it served an educational purpose: it was the first home of Penang Free School from 1821 to 1927, after which Hutchings School took over the building until 1960.
Its history also bears the scars of World War II, when its western wing was struck by a bomb, leaving half of the building destroyed.
In the early 1960s, the building was at risk of demolition. Plans to construct a new school were cancelled when Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, proposed converting the historic building into a museum dedicated to Penang’s history and heritage.

The Penang Museum and Art Gallery was subsequently established in 1964 and officially opened on 14th April 1965 by Penang’s first Governor, the late Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj.
Since then, the museum has served as an important repository for the state’s history, housing collections spanning historical documents, photographs, maps, costumes, furniture and other cultural artefacts.
The museum reopens to the public after a 9-year closure
Since shutting its doors in April 2017, the museum’s lengthy closure was primarily due to the scale of restoration and upgrading works required to both the historic building and its exhibition spaces.
According to State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, the museum is housed in a Category One heritage building, meaning restoration work had to be carried out with specialist expertise and greater care than a conventional renovation. Construction was also brought to a standstill for over two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and there were also difficulties in obtaining imported materials.
The RM18 million restoration was carried out in two phases, encompassing the restoration of the museum building and the development of its new galleries. Results of the major project reflect the complexity of working on a historic structure, and promise an experience of historical stories that goes beyond traditional displays.
What to expect at Penang State Museum & Art Gallery
Rather than simply viewing historical artefacts and documentation, visitors can expect a more interactive experience with exhibitions that are more immersive than its previous iteration.
Spread across 15 galleries, the revamped museum traces the state’s history, culture and communities, bringing together almost 1,200 artefacts alongside interactive displays and multimedia elements.
Upon registering yourself as a visitor and entering the exhibition space, you will be led up the staircase, with hallways and rooms decked out in old maps, documents, photographs, prints and artworks that provide a visual record of the island evolving through the centuries.
You’ll find school-themed concepts for parts of the experience, including makeshift classrooms and a science lab, to reflect the building’s own history as an educational institution.
Further in, there’s a gallery dedicated to the island’s prehistory, with the wider collection covering archaeological discoveries, including those associated with Guar Kepah.
Another highlight is the collection of early 19th-century watercolours by Captain Robert Smith, an East India Company engineer whose documented paintings of Penang’s landscapes offer a fascinating visual record of what the island looked like more than 200 years ago.
As you wander along the exhibition route, you’ll find reconstructions and room-like displays of Penang’s development, the growth of its multicultural communities, the Japanese Occupation, the road towards independence and the state’s development in the decades that followed.
Some exhibits explore the customs, traditions and everyday lives of communities in Penang, with carefully labelled displays of traditional costumes, furniture, porcelain, musical instruments, cooking utensils, ceremonial objects, and weapons.
The cultural galleries on the ground floor feature a long hallway of household Peranakan objects, as well as displays dedicated to traditional Malay craftsmanship, including intricate woodcarvings.
