The Coffee Cottage: A Cottage-Style Retro Coffee Shop In Penang With Flowers That Only Bloom Once A Year

The Coffee Cottage in Penang

We will hit up aesthetic cafes with modern interiors any day. But for a change of scene, The Coffee Cottage is a coffee shop in Penang that’s bringing with it #cottagecore vibes for patrons who want to go back to the basics with nature to escape from their busy lives in the city.

Here, you’ll get to sip on speciality coffee and matcha drinks, and gorge on cakes, from its cottage-style wooden hut blanketed in gorgeous yellow flowers that only bloom once a year.

The Coffee Cottage may be well-hidden in the gardens of England House – a wedding venue popular for the quaint cottage on its premises – but the cottage and surrounding bricked walls of this “house” makes it pretty easy to spot among the other white houses in a neighbourhood on Taman Belatuk.

With how scenic the whole space looks, the house was even featured in the latest adaptation of a popular TV series, The Little Nyonya, as shared on Facebook by England House.

Among the themed, rustic areas for photoshoots on the house’s grounds sits The Coffee Cottage, a coffee shop serving drinks and cakes from its eye-pleasing wooden hut in a scenic garden.

Instead of regular, standard seats at most coffee shops, you’ll have to navigate your way through the gardens for a seat from a variety of cosy areas here. They include a retro van fitted with bench seats and old-school decor, and an area blooming with plants called “Secret Garden” that has indoor and outdoor seats.

If not for their drinks and decadent cakes, the grounds of The Coffee Cottage and its various seating options are worth exploring if you’re a budding photographer too. The exterior of the cafe is as picturesque as a serene refuge, with blooming yellow flowers almost completely engulfing the fences surrounding the cafe.

What makes the vivid blooms even more special, is that they only blossom once a year for several days. So schedule a visit to the cafe when it is looking its best, and enjoy the idyllic charm of the place along with some cakes and coffee.

But do note that there is no air-conditioning to keep your dining-in-the-garden experience authentic. Rest assured, there will be iced drinks, sheltered seats and trees to keep you shaded from the sun.
