Over 3,000 COVID-19 cases has been recorded in Malaysia

The Health Director-General Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah held a media conference today, 3rd April 2020, to provide the daily updates on the latest COVID-19 statistics in Malaysia. The latest figures for today stands at 3,333 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 827 recoveries, and 53 deaths.
Following yesterday’s update of 208 new cases, today’s the 2nd consecutive day the country has recorded a high number of new COVID-19 cases that exceed the 200 mark. However, the situation is not all bleak as we’ve also seen the highest number of recoveries these past few days.
827 patients cleared of COVID-19 and discharged
With today’s addition of 60 patients, the total number of recovered COVID-19 patients is brought up to a whopping 827. This marks significant progress in our country’s recovery rate and the efficiency of our local hospitals. The figure also represents nearly 25% of total cases, which means that almost 1/4 of all COVID-19 cases in the country have been successfully treated.

However, 2,453 patients are still in treatment and 108 of them are currently in the ICU for extensive monitoring. There have also been new deaths reported today, increasing the death toll to 53. The 2 new deceased persons suffered from existing medical conditions like heart problems and diabetes while a 3rd was a 52-year-old man with no known medical conditions.
Almost 50,000 Malaysians have been tested
The Ministry of Health has revealed that they have tested 47,723 Malaysians for COVID-19. There are still over 8,000 Malaysians who are awaiting results, so we foresee the number of new cases to continue trending upwards over the next few days.

Earlier today, WHO predicted that the number of COVID-19 cases in our country will peak in mid-April, just when the Movement Control Order (MCO) ends. According to The Star, WHO notes that although there are signs that the curve is flattening, this could easily bounce back if control measures are lifted.
However, Malaysians will have to wait for a formal announcement from the government about possible extensions to the MCO as the decision will be made based on the data collected over the next 2 weeks.
Increase in new COVID-19 cases and successful recoveries
While we’re all feeling anxious about the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, we should also rejoice at the government and medical personnel’s efforts in boosting the country’s recovery rate for those infected. That said, we should also prepare for tougher times in the near future as we the number of new cases may continue to surge.
This only means that we should be more vigilant and avoid heading out unless necessary. Our compliance is crucial during this 2nd phase of MCO as it’ll largely determine how the government chooses to proceed with handling this COVID-19 pandemic.
