M’sian’s tip on how to stop cats from napping on food covers

Anyone who has a feline friend at home mostly likely know how cats make the oddest spaces their lazing spots. It doesn’t matter if it’s an egg carton or the bathroom sink – the meme “If it fits, I sits” in reference to mischievous cats claiming everything as so-called beds is a common occurrence in every cat owner’s life.

We often leave them be on the account that they’re too adorable to disturb when napping. But when it’s an inconvenience, we’re forced to think outside of the box. Cue this Malaysian man sharing an unusual tip to stop cats from napping on food covers – by sticking forks through the holes of common household food covers.

Modern day solution for a modern day cat problem

The tip was shared to a Facebook group “What are your cats up to today?” by netizen Zack Yusuf Ozil. Several photos he shared online shows a scene that most cat owners who have food covers would have likely seen before – cats lazing on food covers. And as anyone would attest to, food covers are typically used to keep pests such as houseflies away from food, and not as pet beds.

While it’s difficult to understand cat logic, we think that food covers may be considered prime napping spots because their many holes make for an airy “bed”. This is, after all, always welcomed by humans and animals alike living in the blistering Malaysian heat.

The only downside to this behaviour, besides getting some cat fur on our food, is that food covers are often made of not-so-sturdy plastic that risks bending over time with every additional naptime for our cats. So instead of buying a new food cover every time it spoils, cat owners with the same problem can try out Ozil’s “hack” of spearing forks through the food covers to deter cats away from resting on them.

Pet owners all know the pain of splurging on blankets or pet beds so our furbabies can rest their heads comfortably, only for them to end up claiming the most unusual spots and spaces as their beds. After seeing Ozil’s photo, we can say that the next time we come across our cat taking naps on a food cover, we might just know what to do.
