Lilian’s Cake House
The return of Y2K apparel and film cameras reflect just how much we all love retro things. It seems like cafes in Kuala Lumpur have taken a page out of this book and a trip back in time too. Cue Lilian’s Cake House in Mont Kiara. This new cafe exudes all the charms of retro Parisian bistros – and with vintage chiffon cakes to match, you can have an Emily In Paris moment in KL while gorging on carbs here.

A nice contrast to the towering glossy buildings in Mont Kiara is Lilian’s Cake House. This cosy vintage cafe stands out in the urban surroundings with its retro charm and vintage glory – it looks almost like a full-fledged dining establishment from the 1950s, thanks to its charming entrance and dining area that comprises black-and-white chequered floors and booth seats.

The cafe’s retro diner-style aesthetic is unmistakable even from the outside. Elaborate French-style doors and a striking red sign greet patrons, but inside is where the cafe’s personality truly comes to life.

With splashes of retro orange, green and red, the ambience is definitely a blast from the past. Discover and be wowed by the details that transform the cafe’s space into a trademark diner, such as framed vintage posters and patterned tablecloths.

Feel like you’re the main character of an old-school sitcom as you make yourself comfortable at a table or booth seat, and get your tummy prepped for sweet treats that are as enticing as the decor surrounding you.

The cafe also welcomes patrons’ furbabies, so bring along your four-legged darlings to join in on your very retro and fun day out.

Lilian’s Cake House doesn’t just go all out with the retro-themed interior – even their cakes are akin to circa-1950s bakery-style bakes. Their customisable whole cakes (from RM65) are a star. Heavy on the frills and piping, with bespoke vintage letterings to top, the assortment of cakes here are a feast for the eyes.

But if you’re dining in, opt to have a slice of cake instead. Despite the generously slathered frosting, Lilian’s Cake House’s cakes are actually iced with ultra-light dairy whipping cream that goes harmoniously well with the fluffy chiffon cake layers.

The flavours offered here are relatively simple, but full of flavour. Their bestseller is the Hojicha Chiffon (RM19) – it’s a super light cake with hints of rich cocoa, and layered with houjicha cream that binds the meltingly-soft layers together.

Not to be missed is the Belgium Dark Chocolate (RM19), which is luxuriantly rich yet ethereally soft. A cherry is perched atop a smooth chocolate ganache layer for that iconic old-school flair. For something more refreshing, there’s the Earl Grey Chiffon (RM19) with all the softness and creaminess of a good slice of cake, but tasting like a warm cup of tea on a rainy day.
