Malaysian states records zero new COVID-19 cases


Penang has been recording zero new COVID-19 cases for 8 days straight.

It wasn’t too long ago that many Malaysians were concerned with crowds seen at markets in Penang during Movement Control Order (MCO), which led to a fleet of firefighters voluntarily sanitising streets to keep the public safe. 

But showing that Malaysians have learned to adapt in these unprecedented times, several states in Malaysia have recently been recording no new COVID-19 cases. This includes Penang, with zero new cases recorded for 8 days in a row as of yesterday, 4th May 2020, along with Sarawak, which saw no new cases as of yesterday as well. 

No new COVID-19 cases in Penang

According to a report by The Star on 4th May 2020, Penang has not only been recording zero new COVID-19 cases for over a week now, it also has only 1 fatality out of its total 121 COVID-19 cases.  

Keeping those wins higher, there are currently zero red zones left in the state, with 3 green zones and 2 yellow zones remaining. This follows news of an increase in green zones in Malaysia, which signifies that there have been no new COVID-19 cases for 2 weeks in those state districts. 

Penang also sees zero active cases left in the state after its remaining 2 active cases were discharged at noon on 4th May 2020, as reported by New Straits Times. There are also no patients admitted for COVID-19 at any of its hospitals currently.

Sarawak also reports promising recovery

Sarawak now also has more green zones than yellow and red zones, with 26 green zones in total.

While the districts of Kuching and Kota Samarahan are still classified as red zones with 178 active cases in total, there have been no new cases recorded yesterday, which is a first for the state since the implementation of MCO on 18th March 2020.

Another impressive feat, Sarawak also sees 301 recoveries from its total 523 recorded cases, putting the state’s recovery rate at 60%. 

Penang & Sarawak flatten COVID-19 curve

Reaching these feats have not been an easy task on Malaysian frontliners nationwide. But it’s a breath of fresh air to see these 2 states report a bright outlook on Malaysia’s road to recovery from the virus. It is more important than ever for all of us to adhere to MCO now so we don’t undo all that has been done, as seen in these states.
