28 people arrested at a birthday party in KL

Malaysia is still devastated by the effects of the pandemic. With daily cases staying above the five-figure mark, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur continues to be under a lockdown with restrictions on major non-essential services and social gatherings.

Despite the restrictions, there are some who take the rules for granted like this group of partygoers who were arrested by the police over the weekend for breaching Covid-19 SOPs during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Yesterday, 18 July 2021, New Straits Times reported that cops nabbed some 28 partygoers, 16 men and 12 women, at a luxury residence located in Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.

The guests between the ages of 27 and 63 have taken part in a birthday bash of a woman organised by her husband on the 36th floor of the apartment where drugs were involved.

Upon receiving information, the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigations Department (CID) led by Assistant Commissioner Nasri Mansor conducted a raid on the premises at 1AM and found ketamine and condoms believed to be used by some of the guests.

Urine tests conducted by the City Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department found that 11 revellers – seven men and four women – tested positive for drugs.

Offenders arrested and fined for breaching Covid-19 SOPs

Nasri, who is also the deputy chief of the CID, told the press that compound notices will be issued to the owner of the apartment and also the agent who arranged the rental of the unit during the MCO.

“The unit was rented for RM300 per night. Partygoers were celebrating the birthday of one of the suspects. They communicated via WhatsApp.

“The unit has three rooms and one was used for them to dance to loud music,” Nasri was quoted as saying by The Star.

He reminded the public to always adhere to Covid-19 SOPs and to “not to take part in illegal activities such as private parties” that breach them.

Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported that the offenders were arrested and fined under Section 22 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, Section 12(2) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
