It’s not hard to find a good hamburger in Malaysia. From glorified fast-food chains to humble roadside stalls, you’ll find a good smattering of dressed up and dressed down versions of the ultimate handheld snack around.

Below, we rounded up some of the best burgers from homegrown restaurants in the Klang Valley that take two buns, a juicy patty, cheese and some sauce to form a mouthwatering meal.

1. Spade’s Burger – classic to monstrosity burgers

Spade’s Burger is a highly recommended burger spot in Klang Valley. But they actually have their roots in Penang, operating first as a humble roadside burger stall in Taman Pekaka back in 2013. Ever since then, they’ve blown up with a total of 10 outlets nationwide – all delivering the same burgers with double the proteins that they’re best known for.

Burgers here are sorted into Original, Light & Easy, and Extreme categories – deciding on which one to go with will depend on your appetite for burgers during your visit.

All burger orders come with a free-flow drink and a side, with options such as onion rings and housemade pork nuggets.

You’ll find classics like the Spadesburger (RM14.90), the burger joint’s signature cheeseburger, and Dark Knight (RM16.90), which comes with a generous smothering of an in-house Spade sauce, on the Original list.

On the other side of the menu are monstrosities you can barely hold with one hand – the Extreme burgers, for serious meat lovers. Options on this list include Burger Of Steel (RM24.90) with crispy streaky bacon on top of a pork or beef patty, and Megamess (RM20.90) that comes with sauteed mushrooms, a sunny side up egg, and mushroom wedges.

2. Mean Mince – deep-fried burgers

Homegrown Mean Mince is best known for bringing a uniquely American spin on the humble burger to Malaysia – they serve deep-fried burgers (RM20.90), which are inspired by the greasy, lip-smacking food fare that you’d find at carnivals in the States.

The bonafide signature burger features bread dough encasing caramelised onions, cheese, and a juicy patty instead of the usual burger buns. The whole thing gets deep-fried so that the dough is crispy on the outside, while containing the meaty juices and stringy cheese within.

Other burgers worth ordering at the American-themed restaurant is the MM Sliders (RM21.90), which lets you sink your teeth into a trio of sliders with each buttery brioche bun sandwiching a charred 40-gram beef patty.

They also serve various hedonistic sides, such as a Jalapeno Poppers (RM16.90) and Mac & Cheese Balls (RM10.90).

3. Fowlboys – ASMR-crispy fried chicken burgers

When it comes to packing ASMR-crispy fried chicken between toasted buns, there’s no spot that does it quite as good as Fowlboys.

While you won’t find any beef or pork burgers on their menu as they source all their ingredients from halal suppliers, you’ll get a lip-smacking patty replacement – juicy chicken thighs. This protein is accompanied by other savoury ingredients and a housemade sauce between buttery potato buns.

The specialty here is the OG Sandwich (RM22) with pickles, Fowl jam, and a special Cluck sauce. For a burger that treads on sweet, savoury, and everything tangy, the Sugar Daddy (RM23) is a flavour explosion with honey butter chicken thigh, tangy slaw, gherkins, and garlic mayo.

You can pair these hearty burgers with all-American sides such as skin-on fries (RM8.50) and mash & gravy (RM11.90).

4. Nak Nak – Korean twists on burgers

K Fry Urban Barbecue has already secured a place in Malaysians’ Korean fried chicken-loving hearts. So it comes as no surprise that their sister brand, Nak Nak, is another gem among foodies – especially those who crave burgers, as they serve up a collection of Muslim-friendly beef and chicken burgers.

They have nine burgers on the menu, ranging from non-spicy to spicy ones. Their signature is the Cheeseburger (RM21.90). A juicy beef patty is pressed between a toasted bun with pickles and lettuce – it’s simple but delivers savoury satisfaction.

For some kick, they serve the Spicy Gochujang Mozerella Nak Dak Burger (RM24.90) and Spicy Cheeseburger (RM23.20), with burger ingredients doused with Korean spicy sauces.

To cool down from the heat, they also have  milkshakes (RM12.90/each) on the menu, with flavours such as Joy Cookie and Strawberry.

5. The BRGR – seafood burgers

The hefty and juicy burgers at The BRGR have been satisfying patrons since 2017. There are currently 24 burgers on the menu, but undeniably the most popular one here is the simplest – the Classic Australian Beef (RM16.90), with a juicy Australian beef patty, lettuce, and melted cheese sandwiched between buns.

For something more over the top, their seafood burgers are a standout. There’s the UFO Giant Fried Sotong (fro. RM21.90) and Soft Shell Crab (RM19.90). The latter is an indulgent seafood burger that presses a beef or chicken patty with deep-fried crab – legs and all – between buns, alongside fresh veggies.

6. Magpie by Burgeratory – signature gourmet pork burgers

Magpie by Burgertory is no hidden gem despite its tucked-away location on the 2nd floor of a shoplot. A gourmet burger that holds a legendary status among scores of foodies in Klang Valley is the pork burger, or Burgertory Classic (RM26), from the restaurant.

This no-frills signature burger of theirs comes with just a thick pork patty, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and onion crisps. Loyal patrons rave about the juiciness of the perfectly charred patty that gets soaked up by the bun.

Another best-seller menu item at the restaurant is the Bacon Madness (RM36) – it’s a mountain of a burger with smoked cheese, crispy onions, and bacon bits stacked in a perfect pile.

Beyond burgers, Magpie serves a variety of sausages and iberico cuts that are fancy meals you can impress your date with.

7. Burger On 16 – smashburgers & vegetarian burgers

When it comes to variety, Burger On 16 and their menu of over 20 burgers almost never disappoints. From legit smashburgers to vegetarian-friendly patties, the burgers here – with their hand-packed patties and grill-charred exteriors – speak for themselves.

The crowd-pleasers at this homegrown joint are the American-style Mad Cheese (RM30.90), which comes with a beef patty stuffed with cheddar cheese, and California Cheese Skirt (RM32.90) that has a crisp disk, or “skirt”, of cheese. The owner developed the recipe for the burgers after traveling to New York – all the sauces and patties are housemade too.

The New York Swag Double (RM33.90) is our personal favourite, with two double smashed beef patties topped with caramelised and crispy onions. As for vegetarian options, they make a mean Spinach Burger (RM19.90) that pulls together the rich flavours of spinach, nutmeg, garlic, and basil pesto in one bite.

8. KGB – 29 burger options

With seven outlets in Klang Valley, KGB – short for Killer Gourmet Burgers – have cemented themselves as a go-to spot among Malaysians for burgers. They have a whopping 29 burgers on their menu, ranging from beef to fried chicken and vegetarian-friendly options.

KGB also prides themselves on cooking their burgers every way possible – smashed diner-style, to flame-grilled gourmet-style.

All their ingredients are sourced from halal suppliers too, so you won’t have to leave anyone out of your group when you’re dining here.

If the menu leaves you overwhelmed, most of their patrons go for the must-try Animal Style (RM17.90) – a beef patty is mustard-grilled, and topped with sharp cheddar, caramelised onions, and a special Shack sauce.

Their sides are also worth trying. You can upgrade any ala carte burger to a set for RM9.50, to enjoy your meal with a soft drink and a side of fries flavoured with salt and pepper, spicy cajun, or herbs. Our personal favourite side is the crisp Sweet Potato fries.
