Ruma Puteh is new artsy cafe in KL
KL-ites can all agree that the city is a giant playground of photo spots, with gems nestled away in mural-filled back alleys and hidden forests. Cafes have since joined the ranks, with new ones cropping up around us boasting aesthetic spaces for those interested in both good food and photo ops.
A new cafe on the block to add to this list is Ruma Puteh. This cafe, whose name loosely translates into “white house” is set in a former, well, house. And it’s adding more colourful photo spots to KL’s bustling cafe scene, with its artful, tropical dining area and outdoor garden that looks like a modern art museum courtesy of its aesthetic walkways.

Ruma Puteh is located just a stone’s throw from the National Art Gallery and Istana Budaya in Titiwangsa. Surrounded by roadside food stalls on Jalan Kuantan, this new cafe haunt offers a menu of Malaysian comfort food and Western cuisine.

The cafe has both outdoor and indoor dining areas, and the latter is fully air-conditioned. But their outdoor space is worth braving the Malaysia heat for, as the sheltered, tropical-themed dining space is filled with live plants and vibrant decor. There’s also an outdoor garden with seats set among trees – a treat for cafe hoppers and nature lovers alike.

Patrons will be in for a visual treat from the get-go at this aesthetic new KL cafe too, as the cafe’s entrance is made up of minimalist curved archways lined up like dominoes. This arcade of arches lead to the main dining area of the cafe, and is a centrepiece of the outdoor garden, with its impressive architecture.

Aesthetic decor aside, you can also look forward to trying out Ruma Puteh’s menu of Western cuisine and Malaysian comfort food. Find familiar plates of Laksa Bugis (RM19) – noodles with fish-based curry – and Nasi Kerabu Puteri Saadong (RM22.90) – butterfly-pea rice served with sides such as chicken, fried coconut flakes, salad and solok lada, or stuffed chilli in English.
The Kacang Phool (RM20.90) is another comfort food offering worth trying – slices of buttered toast are served with a fragrant bean dip topped with a runny egg.

If you prefer Western food, there are dishes such as Spaghetti Bolognese (RM18.90) and Penne Pesto With Sundried Tomato (RM19.90) too.
