With just a couple of weeks left in September 2022, most of us are likely wondering where our days went. But before we bid adieu to the month, there’s still Malaysia Day celebrations and plenty of fun events in KL to help you make the most of what’s left of September.

From visiting a free MUJI art exhibit with zen vibes to checking out a new extreme park with a variety of thrilling activities, here are 7 things to do in KL besides shopping and cafe-hopping this weekend.

1. Visit MUJI’s art exhibit with zen vibes at The Gardens Mall

To celebrate its 40th Anniversary, MUJI is hosting a free art exhibit called To the Forest of Verbs with “MUJI IS” at The Gardens Mall. Boasting the same clean aesthetics much-loved at their stores, the exhibit comprises tree-like, tube structures that make for great photo ops.

There’s a total of 15 tubes at the exhibit, each one containing a MUJI product and plaque detailing the thought process behind its creation. Spot items such as a chair, pyjama set, and umbrella displayed in alcoves carved in the tubes, all flown in from Japan.

The exhibition was first held in Japan at ATELIER MUJI GINZA, and will be on display in Malaysia for about two weeks.

2. Hop on a ferris wheel & play carnival games at Euro Fun Park

There’s something about fun fairs that brings out the inner child in us. So for some old-school fun involving merry-go-rounds and carnival games, drop by Euro Fun Park. This travelling fun fair is currently in Bukit Jalil till 18th September, and has a plethora of thrilling rides for you to take on with your friends.

Find over 20 exciting rides at the fun fair, including family-friendly amusement park classics such as Dodgem Car, Ferris Wheel, and Merry-Go-Round. Else, there’s the Sky Rider Challenger and Wave Swinger that’ll take thrillseekers for an exhilarating ride through the air.

If you’re opting to take it slow, try your hand at carnival games instead – you might just get to snag plushies and other mementos of your time spent here.

There’s a small entry fee to enter Euro Fun Park, and tokens (RM2/each) to purchase and use on rides – expect to spend between 4-6 tokens for each ride.

3. Get your adrenaline pumping at Xction Xtreme Park

If spending time indoors at an extreme theme park sounds like an absolute blast, Xction Xtreme Park is a newly-opened spot in Sunway Velocity Mall worth visiting. Spanning over 20,000 square feet of space, it features a wide variety of activities – including trampolines, tube slides, and dodgeball courts.

The ninja-warrior course here is perfect for thrillseekers looking to challenge themselves on gruelling rope courses – which will have you hanging entirely upside down at one point. Other adventurous activities you can try out include wall climbing, as well as Sky Glider that lets you “fly” through the air.

Those with little ones won’t have to leave their kiddos behind – anyone over 90cm in height is eligible for entry to this extreme park. It’s also highly encouraged to wear proper sports attire while you’re here – grip socks can be purchased for RM6/pair when you’re booking your tickets.

4. Play old-school games at the Malaysia Games Festival 2022

For a real dose of nostalgia, the Malaysia Games Festival – or Festival Permainan Malaysia – is back this year for a 3-day event, beginning 23rd September. The annual festival, first held in 2015, aims to promote local traditional games and sports. And get this, it’s held right at the iconic Dataran Merdeka which truly makes the ultimate backdrop for your congkak and kelereng showdowns.

The festival will host 10 traditional games – ranging from easy-going ones such as congkak and batu seremban, to archery and sarung football (bola sepak kain pelikat) – which you can watch. But if you have a competitive bone, opt to join in on the fun and challenge other visitors at games such as marbles (kelereng) and sack race (lari dalam guni berkembar).

Besides traditional games, there will be MyGasing and Pocket Bike competitions, as well as food trucks and live performances to check out.

5. Celebrate Malaysia Day by donning traditional garb

It’s always fun and meaningful to dress up in traditional clothes, for a change from our usual shorts and slippers. After two years of online-only events due to the pandemic, Keretapi Sarong is back in 2022 with a Retro Kuala Lumpur theme.

For the uninitiated, participants opting to celebrate Malaysia Day by joining this event will have to dress up in a sarung or traditional clothes. While dressed to the nines, you can meet up other participants at one of five checkpoints, and head over to a secret location – this is only revealed on the day of the event.

Though it’s not a strict requirement, participants are encouraged to use public transportation, to show off their Malaysian spirit and cool garbs. Activities are also held at the station and on the trains, including singing sessions, traditional dancing, and games.

6. Take photos with a full “moon” at Kwai Chai Hong

The Mid-Autumn Festival may now be behind us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy full moons and charming Chinese decor. Over at the well-known Kwai Chai Hong, there’s a new public art exhibition called “Beyond The Moonlit Door”.

As its name suggests, the lane has been decorated with several traditional Chinese doors in various warm shades and lanterns overhead. At its entrance, there’s a public art installation titled “Endless Frames” that comprises acrylic sheets with Chinese lattice patterns.

The exhibition is open from the early hours of 9am till midnight. But you’ll want to head here right when the sun sets, as you’ll get the illusion of a magnificent moon through a red lattice arch – thanks to an illuminated image of a moon on a wall along the lane.

7. Explore pop-up food vendors & bars at Tiffin At The Yard

Over the past weekend, PASSPORT TO FEAST: SG At The Yard has been introducing to Malaysians mouthwatering foods whipped up by mixologists and chefs hailing from neighbouring Singapore. This weekend, from 15th to 18th September, the food festival continues at Tiffin At The Yard with a host of award-winning bars and pop-up eateries.

Expect to spend a day gorging on a range of dishes.

Some savoury and sweet food highlights at this week’s food fest session are Lamb Rendang Tater Tots and Katong Laksa from Rempapa, and Chili Crab Doughnuts and Coffee Cardamom Walnut Cake from Flourish Bake House.

Else, have a laidback evening sipping on signature cocktails from Sago House’s pop-up stall – they were voted one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2022. Besides hunting out the best food and cocktails here, you can also check out an art installation from Singaporean visual artist, Tobyato, in the heritage building.
